Disappointing how expensive these models are now.
50 years ago they were $1.99, now $29.99. Explains why parents rather have kids play cheap video games than build something. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703093827.jpg |
Yeah it's horrible how much a kit cost nowadays. Lowest I remember was buying the Snake and Mongoose kits in Woolworth for $3.99 back in the 70's.

Then add in the cost of all the silly little paints you have to buy.
You can usually buy a die-cast of whatever you want for less with more detail unless you’re a super good modeler. Love what you’re doing Marty |
This Fujimi 356 kit is super neat though, you assemble almost everything that’s on the real car. There was a little crank/piston piece to put the case around, then the cylinders, then the heads, etc. The unibody pieces..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703268920.jpg

Working on a Chevelle for dad right now. Got a new Badger airbrush for an anniversary gift so I get to use it for this project.

Tip: take a fine tipped pen and make vertical lines in the air filter to simulate pleats. Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk |

I lived in Talladega, Alabama back in the mid 90s and used to go to an indoor flea market and buy Nascar diecast at a booth there from time to time. Today I rediscovered these, had them stored in a model car box.
These are 1/64 Racing Champions cars. They were removed from their blister packs and placed in the little clear cases and that is how they were when I purchased them back around 1997. The Dale Earnhardt and Michael Waltrip cars are unique in that they are Collector Series 1 and have removable rubber tires that say Racing Champions on the tires. They are dated 1990. The graphics on the Waltrip car are stickers and the Earnhardt car has tampo graphics or decals. The Harry Gant car also has stickers but it also has tampo or decals and is dated 1989. The Harry Gant car also has plastic wheels and tires but they also say Racing Champions on them as well. These are from the early days of collectable diecast and I can only assume that sponsor deals hadn't been established yet and that would explain Racing Champions on the tires and or the lack of sponsors. Keep in mind these were for kids then and they couldn't put tobacco or alcohol related product names on the cars hence the Harry Gant car #33 looking so plain as it would've had Skoal on the car as the primary sponsor. So, today I polished up the clear boxes and cleaned up the little cars a bit. It is funny how crude these cars are as compared to how things are made now. Not the best pictures, or all of what I have but here are some of my models.
Finally on display in my home office after I built the shelving. They have lived in boxes for decades and now I can appreciate them. Most of these are 40+ years old and bought new when I was a kid (in the late '70s and '80s) but a few purchased after that. As a kid, I never took them out of their boxes, just appreciated them as they were http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703600613.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703600613.JPG |
You would love visiting the model shops I've found in Japan

I can't wait to go back as an Adult. |
It'd be fun to be able to take the Tamiya tour. There's factories in Japan and the Philippines, and a big factory store in Tokyo. I don't know how hard it is to gain access, but there's plenty of YouTubers who've managed to get in.

(My original intent was to rotate the display, but who has time for that nonsense?) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703612281.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1703612281.jpg |
Man y'all have some really cool models!!! I had not ever even heard of Tamiya until I was older. When I was a kid building models all I knew about was Revell, Monogram, MPC, and AMT. I think the first time I ever saw the name Tamiya was when it was associated with things like their RC stuff like Clodbuster, Lunchbox, and Midnight Pumpkin. Tamiya makes some super cool kits and some of the very best in modeling tools, paints, and accessories.
