From yesterday's WSJ:

"The Biden administration won’t move to extend a federal moratorium on the evictions of tenants who fell behind on rent in the Covid-19 pandemic in the wake of a court ruling, but it is asking Congress to authorize such an extension.

President Biden would have “strongly supported” a move to further extend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s moratorium, scheduled to expire on Saturday, but that option is no longer legally viable after a recent Supreme Court ruling, the administration said in a statement by press secretary Jen Psaki.

State and local governments have struggled to distribute $47 billion in federal money aimed at helping tenants who can’t (can't, or won't?) pay rent because of the pandemic-triggered downturn, leaving many people at risk of being forced out of their homes when the moratorium expires. (Wait - the Federal government struggles to distribute funds? They sure don't struggle to collect them...)

Just $3 billion of the aid authorized by Congress in December and March had been delivered to landlords and tenants as of June 30, the Treasury Department said in a report last week. (Shocking!)

Where is that money and what is it doing if it's just sitting there?

Where the fook is my money? I filled out that damn form and haven't seen a dime, email or paper work. I bet they are selective on who they give that money to. I am told that we can't take that lost off our taxes so we bend over again with no lube.

If there is no rental income coming in then your expenses generate a loss.
Now whether you can utilize any/all of that loss at once or has to be carried forward of course depends.

What sucks is not being able to get non rent paying deadbeats out to minimize damage. Damage is of course a loss but then there is your time and stress. Neither of which you can capture as further loss.

It should end when there's a shortage of workers, an increase in wages, and a load of government stimulus still flowing.

What they SHOULD be doing is investigating those who are taking advantage of the moratorium and simply not paying rent, not because they can't but because they just don't want to. Those people should have the hammer dropped on them.

Rental assistance is available to states, but the states have largely blown the distribution process. I’d be all over my state government to get off their asses and get the money out.

The problem is, that's just another program to be scammed. One thing we should have learned from 2008/2009 is that no matter how much "assistance" we give to some, they'll still manage to not pay the bills. We had all sorts of loan forgiveness or interest rate reductions, or loans being reworked and we still had people ending up in foreclosure within a short amount of time. We need to stop delaying the inevitable.

Rent assistance distribution should go straight to the property owner. Our legislature could make it happen if they weren't so fixated on ensuring people's "right" not to wear masks and other bull*** hot button issues. They'd rather be talked about on facebook.

That's the crux of the state of U.S. politics. Politicians have figured out they can be reality TV stars with a plot line of "I'm angry/fearful" and AGAINST something. The masses appreciate a good reality TV show which require villains to be successful.

It's easier to be against something and rally support in this country than to actually do something.

Tribalism is about gathering together to be against something. Beginning of the end when everyone gets to participate in their very own reality TV show cult.
