I have said it before and will say it again..success has gone to our heads where we have become arrogant that we can have it all wihout limits or consequences. That we have arrived at the land of goodness and plenty where we dont need to listen or even acknowlege a higher force than ourselves..after all we have science and tech to save us..

LEAKYSEALS951 07-18-2021 02:57 PM

My grandparents blame it on Elvis.

That is because the degradation of morality in society has been increasing for thousands of years. As a rule, every generation is more lax as to what is moral or immoral than the previous one (use acceptable versus unacceptable if it make you feel more comfortable). The change has been a slow process (think the illustration of turning up the temperature of the water in a pot with a frog in it). This seems to have sped up dramatically as of late. Some believe this is a sign of the times.

Everyone is a winner

Can't spank a child for misbehaving

Can't tell a kid that they're bad

Undisciplined kids turn out to be turds.

The difference between our culture now (wrong?) and the culture many of us old farts grew up in (right?) is the working mother. My mom never worked (full time) and the same for almost every one I knew in my age group. We, apparently, were the last generation to have that luxury.

It doesn't mean that all is lost and their is something more wrong with our culture now than there was then. There was plenty wrong in culture back then, also. The Good Ol' Days weren't always that good.

It's just different now, that's all.

There was, in the mean, a set of societal norms and a Constitution that helped, in many ways, define what America as a society meant.

We have never been homogeneous in race or outlook but there was, with exceptions, an expectation of certain behaviors and perspectives: Belief in education, religious tolerance, respect for others, freedom of speech, etc. as discussed in the BoR and the Constitution; the ten commandments without the cross so to speak.

Every successful, free, society operates this way.

Has the US made blunders, often spectacular mistakes? Of course. Show me Utopia and I'll show you a cartoon. But we have, addressed those ills as well as human nature allows.

All societies have an arch, from establishment to ruins that are a tourist destination...whether or not we can arrest the downward trend is in question.

Solutions, causes?

Plenty. I could list 50 off the top of my head.

Start with a complete revamp of our educational system and end two party rule.

I very much agree with your post.

My wife and I sacrificed financially big time so she could stay home with our boys until they were out of high school. Best thing we ever did. I have two successful and responsible sons and I give my wife 99% of the credit. Parenting first.
