One final followup... there is NO single carrier that is a universal solution for everyone... it just depends upon location and how you use it. Both Verizon and AT&T networks just sucked here at my house during peak times... T-Mobile works great. At a beach just south of the Outer Banks... T-Mobile had no service at all .... it was great there too !

I switched to a pay as you go monthly plan quite a few years ago. I had a typical plan like many. They gave me a phone and I could get upgrades or credits toward a new one every so often. I was in the throws of my custody battle and my ex was blowing up my phone every thirty seconds and running up my bill.

At the same time a friend was having personal issues and couldn't get a phone on a regular plan due to his credit. He had a monthly pay as you go phone. I asked what the difference was between his phone and service and mine? said nothing other than he bought his phoen out right and his phone was probably the last model and mine was the newest. Also if he didn't pay his monthly bill on time they cut off his service until he did. He had unlimited calls and texting was limited (this is about ten years ago). I think he paid $50.00 per month to my $250.00.

I decided to give his plan a try thinking what's the worst that can happen? I don't like it and I will switch back. I went to Boost bought a $100.00 phone and a $50.00 plan. It worked great. I had everything I had before and my same number. Boosts plan at that time was for every six on time payments the plan went down $5.00 per month until you hit $35.00 and that was where the plan stayed.

I used Boost for about a year and a half until they eliminated the pay down program. I then switched to Verizon for a bit and currently with AT&T. I buy a new phone when I want one generally the current Android they offer. I have never had an issue I can take my number with me to any plan at the end of any month phones when I want.

My current plan with AT&T is $40.00 per month unlimited calls and texting and data but I don't use the data.

Cellphone Plans

Another thing to keep in mind is that MVNOs provide service at cheaper rates because their customers are generally not provided the same high speeds that the network owners (ATT, VZ, TMO) provide to their direct customers, and the MVNO customers are the first ones to be throttled if the network gets congested.

In my experience with Spectrum Mobile ($45/mo for ‘unlimited’ service), which uses the VZ network, the speeds are more than sufficient for my needs. And if you don’t use a lot of data, they have a plan that provides data by the gigabyte, for $15/mo per gigabyte. So if you generally use less than 2 GB of data per month, you’ll pay less than $45.

Oh…‘unlimited’ data is really 20GB in a month. After that, they throttle your data speed to 3G, making it essential unusable for the rest of the month. I never use that much data in a month, so it never affects me.

To get those mobile rates, you need to be a Spectrum TV or Internet customer. And there is no contract with them.

I also bought data service for an iPad that I have, from a newer company called Tello. Their rates are very low, and they have a wide variety of plans available, so you can build one to suit your needs. And no contract is required; it’s a month to month service.
