An old crown popped off and ...

I swallowed it!

I was eating a mix of carrots, broccoli, walnuts, etc. and as I was chewing and swallowing, it felt funny for second, but I swallowed and put the mix away.

The side of my tooth felt funny, so I looked in the mirror and realized my crown had come off!

So the solution to finding it is... A: barfing it up, B: passing it or C: nothing.

Looking online, it seems passing it is the best answer, if you really want it.💩 Yuck.

I’m headed out of town tomorrow, so I won’t have my familiar facilities to look for it.

What have you done or what would you do?

Edit: I have all of my molars, so being second from the rear, it’s pretty far back.

The "correct" thing to do is get a chest xray to insure it isn't in your lungs. Don't take ipecac. If it is in your stomach, most will pass through uneventful in the next several days. If it is a smooth crown, it will most likely pass. If there is a sharp edge, such as a post sticking out of it, things can get more interesting.

This is not medical advice, I have no idea what I'm talking about. It's a car forum. ;)

Also, this is a really good time to do google searches on the subject. People ingest some really weird stuff. Sewing needles can somehow get through the GI system without an issue. Another common problem- Batteries. People ingest batteries, which can cause problems due to their composition. A lot of psych issues come up where people eat weird stuff.

Edit- if it comes out, post pics or it didn't happen....

Ya, 99% chance it passes right thru.
Panning for it serves 2 purposes: i) confirms it is not lodged in your digestive tract and ii) saves you $$ by not having to have a new one made This assumes that your tooth ‘stump’ is still intact. If the tooth is broken off at the gumline (tooth fracture) only i) will apply.

dentist90 07-29-2021 06:11 PM

Cue the jokes about ****ty dental work 😉

A930Rocket 07-29-2021 06:14 PM

The stump is still there and it’s a molar, so it’s not noticeable. I’ve probably had it 10 or 15 years by now. No pain, but it’s sensitive to cold.

I’m going out of town, to the track this weekend and not sure how or if I can dig for gold...

What’s the going rate for a replacement crown?

Crowbob 07-29-2021 06:16 PM

I honestly thought this thread would be something juicy about Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

gchappel 07-29-2021 06:17 PM

99++% chance it passes.
If you did not choke or cough, very unlikely it is in your lung-just like it is very unlikely the carrot you just ate is in your lung.
If it doesn't pass in 3-4days, talk to your doctor (not your dentist) They will probably order an xray to see where it is.
The real question is how many times do you wash it before you put it back in your mouth.
gary

BTW, just crap in a bag and seal it up. Camping stores have bags made for that. You can pan for gold when you get home.

Matt Damon went through some bags of crap in "The Martian" if I recall.
You should watch that movie while you wait for it to pass!

In Canadian pesos about $1200. Recementing probably more like $150 including ultrasonic cleaning and sterilization.

In Cali? Dunno, maybe just your left nut? 🤷*♂️😉

You might end up needing a root canal and new crown anyway. I didn’t swallow my crown but the dentist would not reuse it. Also, needed a root canal.

Do they make different types of material crowns now? The one I had was gold.

After looking in the mirror, I was surprised how much of the base tooth was still there. It felt like when they were grinding the original tooth down, it was a tiny little knob and the crown was a big heavy item. I can see now, there was not much to it.

There are different materials today.
You will need the tooth looked at to see if there is decay around the margins, or if there was some overriding reason why the crown fell off like overconvergence,

but if it is cold sensitive, that means the tooth is probably still vital, which is good.

If you somehow find the crown, and if you can reuse it, ask if you can save on sterilization costs-

... where was that thread about "You can fix anything with JB Weld." that's after you've given it a quick rinse under the hot tap ;)

Not even important.

Get something emergency to fill the gap within a couple days.
If the crown is there, clean it and stick it back in place.

Otherwise the adjoining teeth and roots will try to move in sideways to fill the gap. Then they are off alignment as well.
Vice grip clamping force matters. Especially with a bad back or painful sleep.
I suggest a good fitting bite splint or mouth guard to lessen grinding. Clean every day.

Or more dental work and several more teeth pulled in the future at $5k+/per.
The implant posts into the jaw bone need a year to heal.
Then the custom replacement piece. Then more time/money/pain.
Troubles have only started.

mattdavis11 07-29-2021 07:45 PM

Going to the track, take a colander, and "pan" the crown out. Maybe a bumper dumper and a trash bag. Of course you will need plenty of water to clean the turds, unless you don't eat and drink Budweiser (Butt Wiper) all weekend, then it will probably be a surprise in your shorts.

Oh fook, the going outta town part. I am sorry but I don't know why I find this funny. Digging for it will be a *****. Hope you are going out of town for business on your own instead of going with wife and or family.

I had mine fall off before and basically they just stick it back on there. Thankfully, I was able to feel it come off both times. I wish you luck.

No one has mentioned taking a shower with the missus and using his foot at the shower drain?

dewolf 07-29-2021 08:44 PM

I'd be saying goodbye to that thing forever. I'd pay for a new one rather than do poo patrol. Bad enough picking up dog sh$t let alone having to rummage through last nights meat and three veg. Don't mistake a bit of corn for your gold tooth....

Pazuzu 07-29-2021 09:30 PM

Everyone with the "check yo poops while on your trip" are wrong.

Instead, get the "unknown trip bathroom stress" and keep everything in until you get home. Then, you only have to sift through one (big...really big...kinda hard...) load.

You know, the stress when the unknown bathroom options are *just not quite right* and your body suddenly becomes a bank vault?

Well, when and if we ever meet Rocket, we'll all know why his breath smell like siht
