So there are a few already, Electrified Garage was started by Rich, of Rich Rebuilds fame on YouTube. You can see on the videos that servicing these EV’s are incredibly difficult, and in the case of Tesla of you really can’t get spare parts.

OK, you got me there. All those rare earth metals just magically appear and the power to charge the EV come from Unicorn farts. Then there is the little problem with our entire infrastructure would have to be rebuilt from the ground up and the utilities will pass that cost onto the consumer. Other than that, its all good.

This is the perfect solution fallacy. There is no simple or easy fix and the shift to EVs are going to require careful infrastructure planning.

rare earth metals are not rare

and BTW, I hope we don't go 100% electric - a few small, lightweight sports cars won't kill the planetoid (esp. if run on biofuels)

The most convenient time to charge your EV should be overnight in the garage, now just make sure there is a multi-stage fire supression system installed there as well.

24 hours recommended to extinguish a Tesla battery fire, nah.

Damn... ^

At least Pintos had to be plowed hard before bursting into flame.

Some in Govt. are pushing EV's in order to track the movement of private citizens.

It's in the so-called "infrastructure bill"...the promotion and requiring of EV's...

This bill has damned little to do with fixing bridges and roads. It has a lot to do with centralized government gaining more control and power over the people.

Forcing us into EV's is part of the overall power grab plan.

Plus, that creates a new peak power time which could lead to rolling black outs in some areas.

Yep, just another power grab and rewarding their friends.

What about the huge earth moving tractors that weigh tons ? Then there is every jet and plane in the sky. All ocean liners and navy ships except for a few nuke ones. All the military’s in the world. All our long haul 16 wheel trucks. Electric will just not make it. EV’s not ready for prime time. And about climate change , I lived on a hill in south San Diego. My Son would play there with his friends when he was a kid and he would bring home seashells and fossils. We lived 7 miles from the ocean. In other words, much of San Diego was covered by the ocean. There has always been climate change.

I don’t understand this argument. If we can’t solve all problems at once, we should solve none?

I like the concept of EV's but we are not there yet. By trying to get "there", we will eventually get "there".

1990C4S 08-09-2021 06:13 AM

How are EV's being forced on anyone? They are about 2% Evs in the USA, I think you can keep your diesel/gas vehicle a while longer.

You can rail against the tax breaks all you want, beyond that, what's the big deal?

Additionally, you should be very concerned about where EV's will be built. If there is no demand in the USA the entire automotive industry will eventually be lost to Europe, China, Japan, etc. I doubt any of you want that to happen.

The aren't...yet.
That is the point.
Not suddenly becoming aware when the ship is sunk.

Problem is large scale forced phasing in ten years as pushed by "the squad" doesn't solve problems, it creates new ones and shifts old ones rather than eliminates.

Gotta have nukkee in place first.

Until then, EV's are practical technolegy in limited applications.

Lectric cars aint green, fyi. The lithium batteries are strip mined in Chiner and it really tears up the planet. Those batteries are volitile, can blow you up if not maintained or installed incorrectly, and just all around not-green, for those who think they are being the solution, lol! Derp...

1990C4S 08-09-2021 08:24 AM

The expert has spoken. Back to gasoline and diesel people.

widebody911 08-09-2021 08:28 AM

Because ICE cars have never run out of fuel...

I just dislike the false narratives around them.

I used to race electric RC in an open gas/electric monster truck class.

As for the "what the horse and buggy folk said" argument, well, I'm not sure there were calls to ban horses in just a few years despite not having infrastructure to supply cars.

And a second point on that, is that eletric cars used to outnumber gasoline cars by a significant margin.
Probably a forgotten history, oh well.
Then along came a few inventions that popped gasoline into the lead.

What I object to is the forcing.
People do want better and if you force suboptimal it has long term costs.
The best scenario is to let electric cars develop as a luxury item for those with the passion.
They have the resources, and will make it happen.

Perfectly put.. Also the pricing...
I've had 2 E-Golfs. Wonderful tools for the price. I'd love a Taycan or Audi Etron GT but $140K ? Are you joking ? And forcing this with an electrical grid that cannot handle today's needs (and nuclear plants being shutdown, presumably to be replaced by unicorn fart plants), probably not clever.. I can see at least in Cali a big fire where power was cut prior (as a voluntary shutdown) or during, and people with electric cars who cannot recharge and leave.. O the lawsuits...

Government edicts have resulted in most manufacturers stoppiing development and research on the ICE - hah, ICE on ice, and a lot of developed countries have a 2030-35 mandates to not make gas cars anymore, a lot of big cities will be banned to gasoline cars earlier than that. They may not force it on you today, but it's the same idea as California SMOG standards forcing the hands of manufacturers all over the US. You wanna sell everywhere ? you abide by the most stringent standard. It IS happening. The question is how long will gas be legal... I fear for my classics, on one hand they might retain value as fun toys from a bygone era, on the other all it takes one motivated politician and the stroke of a pen and they are banned ("they're coming for my car!!!" might happen before the gun thing ;-) I have hopes that the USA with its "particular" freedom culture and geographical imperatives will resist longer. Probably not California though.

Point is, electric cars need to be charged.

and where do they turn for that power?

Honda.

Well, sometimes...

But mostly they turn to petro, while claiming to be running on good intentions and unicorn farts.
