I don't know what it feels like to be 75 and poor. I remember what it was like long ago, but I knew then I was going to keep on earning more and more. Once you're on a fixed income and you know that's all you're ever going to earn, that has to be a different mindset and I just don't have it. I also don't have kids. But I have met plenty of 75 yr olds who, even if they say their kids are well off, also say they don't want anyone having to go out of pocket for their funeral expenses. Maybe at that age sleeping well at night, knowing they're covered is worth what they pay each month. I don't know. I'm not going to try to talk them out of it if they want it. But 90% of them already have it. So if I can save them some money or get them more or better coverage for the same money, how is that a bad thing?

I wrote a Navajo woman yesterday who was 78. She was in good health and told me she had a savings acct with $8k in it for her funeral expenses, but that her kids and grandkids were irresponsible and did not get along. She is still putting $200/mo into that savings account. Obviously, that money can be wiped out by a single emergency, if not stolen by one of her kids who got hold of her bank card. Would she be better off with a life insurance policy, naming one responsible beneficiary who will honor her final wishes? Once I'm done explaining how stuff works, I sit there quietly. That's when they say, "Ok, let's do it."

The Ex-Mrs. Beard used to tell me to just dump her body on a road someplace, as the government would have to take it to remove the "health Hazard". Fortunately, now her body is someone else's problem...

Dumping your wife's dead body sounds like she wanted to screw up your life with years of court dates, after she was gone

I'm just jabbing at you. I'd love to have a house with more than one water heater.

Carry on.
Sorry I missed this.

Yes. My house has two 75 gallon hot water heaters. Lots of large homes do...as well as multiple AC units and furnaces...and a fireplace on each floor...and bedrooms that I don't even use.

Two don't heat the water any hotter, but it is pretty difficult to ever run out.

That is the beauty of this country (land of opportunity). One does not have to be born into a profession or caste. Your father might be a janitor and you could be an engineer or physician. I carried water home in a bucket and heated it on a fire to bathe as a youngster. I never had AC in a home or car...nor were really ever very warm in my home in the winter until I was an adult. Now I have endless hot water (and my own well)...and keep a large house very comfortable year round (and two vacation homes). Of course this is just proof that if you work hard and smart enough, you can have almost anything. It is all about choices. Choice in how we accumulate wealth (or not), how much we accumulate, and how we spend it.

I am likely more frugal in some areas than almost anyone I know...and spend a good deal more in others (mostly things with a finite, physical manifestation). I would buy a rental home or even a vacation home in a minute...but would pass on an expensive vacation or a new car (as the earlier represents simply moving invested money into a different investment while the latter is gone). Different folks, different strokes.

Exactly. That's why I keep asking him if he offers them term ins. - he seems afraid to answer.

I think the joke in the original post in that you called it a "hot" water heater, and the old joke goes, if the water is hot, why do you need to heat it?

Troll66: He already answered the question of why his clientele want whole life. And it fits with the title of the thread: they don't trust themselves (or others) to save money for their own funeral and/or they may outlive a term policy they can afford. It's expensive being poor.

Rick: Very interesting thread. Thanks for sharing.

LOL. Maybe. Pretty funny. They called them that where I grew up...as they were some sort of mythical creature that no one had ever seen in person (much like an indoor toilet)...I guess "indoor toilet" seems redundant to most that have not dug an outhouse. Older folks called them "flush toilets." Probably redundant as well.

I've had that idiot on ignore forever, so I never saw the question. I would not write term for folks in their 60s and 70s. I can, but I would not. I would do it for their kids, however.

He has answered this at least once if not a few times in this thread. He has a job, he does it well, he's giving these folks what they want. Do they need it? Probably not, but how many things do folks have with money need? I could live with a fraction of the things I have. If they weren't buying this from him, they would be buying it from someone with a lot less compassion for their situation.
