Crazy video of Japan earthquake

I've seen lots of videos from the 2011 earthquake in Japan, but I just came across this I hadn't seen before, which was uploaded last year.

I dont think I realized how long and violent it really was!

WOW! That certainly explains the massive tsunami that followed.

Especially considering this video was taken 81 miles from the epicenter

My two nieces were born and raised in Tokyo. The older one came here for high school and the younger one came here 10 years ago, after college. The older one moved to LA about 4 years ago and she told my sister the one thing she hated about Japan was the earthquakes.

I was in Tokyo that day on my to Narita. Got stranded at the bus terminal with a work peer for 18 hours before we figured out a route that worked to the airport. Agree being raised in CA for comparison that Japan quake lasted a couple hours with alternating intensity

The Japanese people have had to deal with earthquakes, tsunamis, war, and all sorts of disasters for thousands of years. It's why they have a had a homogenous culture for generations. They have had to band together to survive. And that's why they don't care for outsiders or loudmouth rebels. You're expected to go along to get along.

I can't help but admire those Moms covering their children with their own bodies. Sure, that's what we're supposed to do but seeing it is moving.

Plus, I'd like to know who designed those windows. Probably plexiglass but they still stayed put!

It really was. I have been in a few earthquakes but the violence and duration of the quake in the video far, far, far surpasses anything I have experienced.

As I remember it was one of the the highest magnitude earthquakes ever in modern times. Over a 9 and on a logarithmic scale that is huge. It is lasted for a really long time, with lots of after shocks. And then a Tsunami thrown on top.

I lived in Japan twice when I was younger, late 70s and mid 80s. We did have one fairly largish (not THAT large) earthquake the first time that I was there. Quakes were really frequent (pretty much weekly) but REALLY mild. You'd be sitting there watching TV and look at others in the room and say "did you feel that?" I was surprised (a little disappointed) that the various times that I've been in Cali, I've never felt anything. But then different places can have very different characteristics.

Amazing thing there is that there's no chance of looters. Doesn't even enter their minds to behave that way.

Wow. First earthquake, then tsunami, THEN Fukushima reactor meltdown.

My dad worked for GE back in the day and helped get the Japanese nuclear energy program up and going in the 60's. He was part of the team that sold that reactor to Nippon Electric, but he was quick to point out all did was sell them the reactor core, not the environmental controls to keep it cool/running.

It's been nearly 25 years since the last time that I was in Japan, but I never had any worry about crime when I was there. My parents were shocked about how honest the people were. They used to say that a woman could leave her purse on a sidewalk and come back an hour later and it would still be there, and if it wasn't, then it had been turned in to the police with all of its contents.

For me, it is a few days short of 21 years since I have been in Japan.

I had no idea an earth quake could last so long. Before that video... 90 seconds tops maybe?

They'll be dealing with the nuclear accident that followed for many decades.
I watched a video recently and they have MILLIONS of giant plastic bags full of contaminated top soil.
