I honestly believe our male dachshund would eat until he foundered and caused harm to his innards.

We have to use a funny looking bowl with "finger" like projections in it to make him slow down and not have mouthfuls of food to swallow. He eats like someone might steal it at any moment. Our female is a longhair, and she would be fine self feeding, but he would eat anything he can get in his mouth.

My old Doberman was a self feeder.

Reminds me of a story - not sure where I read it though. Might have been on Pelican.

A Kale farmer has a visitor on site and is about to feed his dogs. He goes over and sets down 2 large bowls of raw kale. Dogs come running over and scarf it down.
Visitor says - "I didn't know dogs would eat kale!"
Farmer says - "They didn't the first four or five days."

Some dogs are very allergic to 'grain free'.
Mom's old Bichon Frise started pissing blood and peeing everywhere on expensive carpets, and not from marking turf.
(Others need it.)

Watch for constant paw-chewing and skin rash.

Back in my single days I had a really sweet doberman. She was a total self feeder. One day she started batting her dog food bowl around to let me know it needed to be filled up. I was out of her food. So I hopped in the car and went to the grocery store. They were out of her regular brand. So I got a different brand, of the same type of dog food. I filled up her bowl, and she turned up her nose. The next morning it was still there. That afternoon I knew she had to be really hungry. She decided that food was not so bad after all. The next grocery store visit I went back to the old food. She turned her nose up again. It took two days to get her to love it. I guess she was wanting to be picky, but I felt very sure she would eat whatever was out for her.

My dog says Luke is being stingy and should have me give him several treats!

My dog was a street dog, so fairly certain he would eat until he blew up.

Ours eats like a king, but is a little picky of the flavors. He gets "Stella and Chewy's" raw meat (comes frozen). He doesn't like rabbit and is moderate on beef and lamb and vennison. He loves chicken, duck-duck-goose, and surf-n-turf.

We've heard that because dachshunds were hunting dogs, that they'll just eat and eat. Ours and his brother ate like that. And another that was about the same age, but not sure if he is/was related was a chubby little thing.

Science diet light and half can of cat food. A little warm water, mix it up. Gone in seconds.

Based on this thread, I actually measured how much I was feeding my very active 65lb Moka de Lab... 2.5 cups morning and afternoon... of Pro Plan Large Breed... she's three. The amount will change as she slows down in a few years... or she'll gain weight.

Dang... I just looked on an unopened bag ... I give Moka about 5 cups per day... the "guidelines" for 50-75 lbs is 3-3.67 per day... oink oink .

She looks great and is an athletic sort ... she just burns it off... now .

Just keep an eye on her , excess weight on a dog leads to bad health results. We give Luke 3 cups of food and some dog treats. So far working ok but we are watching his weight .

Update: Luke decided the Science Diet experience was over 😋 . He also didn't care for Blue so he is back on Purina Pro Plan chicken formula and is eating it like a champ . My wife and I decided we will stick with that and there are no issues from the vet .

I've also reduced Moka's daily amount down to 4 cups. I figure if I'm gonna drop 25 lbs over the past month, then she can eat less too . Thanks for this thread btw... it was my "wake-up call" for her ....

Pro Plan (large breed) for Moka the mooch

I lost my doggo Spike the Husky many years ago... I used to feed him Iams or Eukanuba... Never got side eye or stink eye from Spike...

https://www.eukanuba.com/us/why-eukanuba

We rate dogs

Is pushing Just food for dogs not sure if its just hype...

Even Target has a refrigerator with fresh food for dogs in the pet area..

I had been thinking of getting another Husky but this year has been an emotional roller coater so I'm going to hold off..

My brother's Siberian Husky gently removed a full tri-tip from someone's BBQ at the dog park.
