So you think you keep your cars a long time . . .

We went to the state street rod association's Back to the 50s weekend last week. Among the many beautiful machines was this 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible. It has 612,000 miles on it and is still owned by the original owner - the older gent in the chair, wearing a hat. The car looked driven, but practically brand new. He must wipe it down with a baby diaper every time he drives it. It's very well cared for.

He had a huge binder of work he's done on it over the years. On the fender you can see a map of all the places he's driven the car. He's been as far north and west as Vancouver, BC, and as far north and east as Nova Scotia, and as far south as Mexico. Not something you see just every day. I thought the Board would get a kick out of it.

Wow - gives new meaning to the phrase "Drive 'em!"!

I remember some stories about some Volvo owners who did the same.

Thanks for sharing MRM - inspiring!

Cool? Way cool! Love the black steel wheels with baby moons. Some might laugh, but they are "period correct". Tip of my hat to the guy...

That Corvette was on My Car Story with Lou Costabile. I have been subscribed to his YouTube channel for many years now.

Quote:
Margaret Dunning was born in 1910 in Redford Township, Michigan, and moved with her mother to Plymouth in the 1920s. She died in 2015 at the age of 104, having lived 90 years in the same house on Penniman Road in Plymouth.

During her lifetime, Ms. Dunning was a successful businesswoman, philanthropist and civic booster. She and her mother were early supporters of the Plymouth District Library. In 1947, Bessie Dunning and her daughter, Margaret, purchased a house at the library’s present site to provide the facility with a permanent home. In recognition, the library building was named the Dunning Library. Years later, Ms. Dunning gave the Plymouth Historical Society $1 million to fund a major expansion.

In addition to her personal philanthropy, Ms. Dunning was a classic car enthusiast and was a regular participant in the Woodward Dream Cruise with her 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. The Packard convertible won the Classic Car Club of America Trophy at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California, in 2012; Jay Leno presented the award to Ms. Dunning.

Margaret bought it in 1949. She’s given it four upholstery jobs and 22 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer. The Classic Car Club of America awarded it 100 points—its only perfect score.

In addition to the Roadster, she owns a 1966 Cadillac DeVille, a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado convertible, and a 1931 Model A. Her “everyday car” is a 2003 Cadillac DeVille.

Ninety-four years after learning to drive, Margaret still makes special road trips. Just last summer, she motored from Michigan to California at the invitation of Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance. There, she chatted with Henry Ford III and Edsel Ford II, and shared her personal photos of Henry.

And if you notice, while he clearly keeps his car in tip top shape, he doesn't seem to mind paper signs taped to the paint or the pamphlets sitting on the hood. Careful but not obsessive. A good way to be.

My old 912 had over 360K. Original owner used to drive back and forth between AZ and CA. Service records indicated 3 overhauls of the motor. Loved that car. So pure.

I am not in competition with those guys.

I have had my trusty El Camino for 30 years, and it has 378,00 miles now.

I have had my 85 911 for only 27 years, and it is up to just under 186,000 miles. I just returned from a 3,650 mile round trip road trip to the Poconos in PA. We visited Gettysburg, and Valley Forge on the way up there.

Not counting my wife's cars (even though my name is on the title) Since 1974 I have owned three cars total. I still have two of them. So yea, I bond with my cars, and tend to keep them. No car payments in this millennium for me.

So you're saying he doesn't have a sign like this?

I hold the opposite view: I kept my 1995 Subaru Legacy daily driver for 12 years and nearly 200k miles. The car that replaced that is my current daily driver / tow vehicle: a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 193,000 miles and going strong.

I know what you are thinking -- a FORD with nearly 200k miles? That can't be real. But it is. And I still tow my Porsche to the track with it...

nice rig, we are the same but opposite.
I like my nannies on the tow truck not the race car.
The jake brake diesel braking is helpful.

Pretty gratuitous! I like it. My buddy had one of those Explorers with a bazillion miles on it and he couldn’t kill it. That one looks brand new!

I own and drive the four cars shown in my signature.
All but one of them I have owned for at least 25 years each.
The SC is 44 years old, but I have only owned it for 24 years.

I expect the SI to last at least that long also.
