Ride to work and back - 15 miles out, 15 miles back, north side of Chicago to the south side and back. Kind of boring. Nicer if I go from my partner’s place by the lake. Obnoxious and time-consuming enough that I no longer do it every day, but I badly miss my old 5-mile commute that I did every day, year round, no matter what. Other than commuting it’s errands, back and forth to my partner’s condo, and fun rides on the weekends. I hate cars in the city so I generally avoid driving there except the freeway trip to work.

Garage
My regimen lately has been to walk out to the garage, stare at the bikes, and wish I was riding. Nice video - I need to get out more....

On my route...I think I know every bump, expansion joint, and fissure in the road.
I always ride the center of the lane, where it's the smoothest. The Varia will alert me to any cars from the rear.

No daily cycling regiment at all. I ride when I ride, i do other stuff other days. My daily is just Planking, a few pushups and yoga stretches 3 times a day.

Today I had a great gravel ride with a group of pals - 45 miles backcountry with 3500 feet or so of climbing, explored an old Railroad tunnel after some brushbeating, and a Mediterranean lunch in the middle.

Sunday will be a 70 mile/7000 foot roadride sufferfest in the shadow of Mt Hood with some of these same guys and some extra reprobates that want to show us what's what.

(That fellow in the white jersey is heading out this thursday on a solo tour of Australia. He has the right stuff.)

I think your training rides would put me six-feet under! I think I might be able to hang for five or maybe six miles before my tongue would be dragging the pavement.

(I ride with guys and girls who have a more relaxed approach to the event!)

I'm 75 years old and have ridden the same 20-mile loop for 35 years, every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Occasionally do different rides with friends. I ride an industrial strength mountain bike with road tires & enough tools & parts to build a new bike. Nothing clears your head like the zen of chugging down the road on a nice day, focused on the horizon.

Its not my video. Send to me by one of the guys who films our rides. Its intense and if I lay off for the bike a two weeks, I'll pay the piper and get drop in the last ten miles because its all hills to the finish. Lots of strong 30 something year olds on it. They draw blood. Finishing is my accomplishment given the mileage I put in during the week. If I ride more then a few times a week, I have a much easier time finishing. At 55, I have no acceleration out of my legs on those long quarter or more miles, steep up hills when they drop the hammer. Hey, I hurt really bad on those rides. It takes it out of me. Sometimes, I lay down on the floor when I get in and fall asleep there without knowing it for a couple hours. When I finally awake, still in my riding clothes, wife and kids are gone to lunch without me.

Oh I know how that feels!

I don't do group rides because of the "competition" thing. I ride for cardiac health first, general fitness second. The few times I tried riding with others it always turns into a power train and I loathe that. Plus i have fewer negative interactions with cagers when I'm riding alone.

Is that due to your car accident?
Your leg or your back?

^^^ Keep with it...if you don't...it only goes downhill.

My next door neighbor lady is 87 and I went over to her yard today as she was raking up fallen leaves and walnuts. We talked for about a half hour and I noticed that she never set the rake down and was constantly pacing back and forth. I thought...this lady will prob hit 100.

I keep moving. Got a cardio/pulmonary group 2x a week and ride my stationary every day. Also use my clutch, gear shift and big steering wheel every week trying to keep life enjoyable. Getting old ain’t for pussies.

Old? I may not be able to avoid aging but I will never get old!
