Porsche 911 GT3 with Subaru Engine

Anyone see this wild beast yet? This 2007 997.1 GT3 debuted at SEMA, "The GT3 remains boxer-powered, but with an altogether different character courtesy of Subaru." It started off as a rolling shell (crashed and stripped by the previous owner) and was built by Faruk Kugay of DevSpeed motorsports, where it got its engine swapped for ENEOS.

Here are the power details broken down:

Quote:
Kugay selected an EJ25 engine from the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI for the swap. The idea was to keep the GT3 boxer-powered, which would best fit its rear-engine layout. The EJ25 also suited the aim of building an all-out track car. It weighs a full 170 lb lighter than the GT3's original flat-six. Plus, it can be tuned to exceed the original GT3's 415 horsepower as stock.

In pursuit of power goals, the STI engine was treated to a BorgWarner EFR 7064-C turbo. Supporting mods included a Vibrant vertical flow intercooler, Deatschwerks injectors, fuel pumps, and a Nuke Performance fuel cell to supply the go juice. The power goal is 550 hp, the rated max of the BorgWarner turbo.

All that power will be sent to the rear, via the STI's six-speed transmission. It's been kitted out with a reverse-cut ring gear and special bellhousing from Subarugears to suit the rear-engine layout of the Porsche.
Read more details and see more images HERE.

Purists must be cringing. I give it a thumbs up for creativity..

So it'll sound like a modern boxster/cayman 4cyl-turbo.

I suppose if you've got a car with no drivetrain, and your option is a $25k Porsche drive train (number pulled from thin air, no idea on a GT3 drivetrain cost) or a $5k WRX STI drivetrain, then it's not necessarily a bad choice. It wouldn't be my choice. Hell, I'd almost rather see it with LSx power.

I'm not a purist, but I am cringing. Maybe I am a purist.

I see nothing "sacred" about new Porsches. Folks can do whatever the hell they want with them and I will never be offended. This one is actually kind of interesting on many levels. It's just a car, and a track car at that. Go faster for cheaper? I don't think I've ever seen that one before.

If subarus didn't blow engines at the track every weekend I go maybe it will be ok.

Turbo subarus are unreliable after modifications or track abuse. Not a lot of safety left on the builds.

Add the blown hoses, oil leaks,

Why would anybody like a down grade???

No thank you

I'm lovin' this answer.

This sort of reminds me of when Wheeler Dealers did the 997 with the gold Carrera script and crazy gold wheels. Hard pass.

This also skeeves me just like when the TV shows put an LS in everything, including Fords. If I wanted a Subaru, a. I'd be a lesbian, and b. I'd just buy a Subaru.

The article says ....

"Plus, it can be tuned to exceed the original GT3's 415 horsepower as stock."

Ok, but for how long??? One track weekend?

Salvage GT3’s pop up pretty often so engines are available.

If this was in an air cooled 911 everyone would be *****ing and moaning, but since it’s not it’s unique and cool?

Whatever.

Ruin an Icon.... Replace a known wicked durable motor with one made from Tissue Paper.... How is this a thing?

Makes the fanboys think it is attainable. Total POS....

Cheers

Great thing is if he blows up the Subbie engine, well, it's only a Subaru engine.

I hate to say it, but I would rather see an electric conversion than a Subie motor in that thing...

My mechanic charges around 2k for an engine swap....New fluids and consumables.

I guess you could start buying WRX engines from wrecks and enjoy your GTwrx.

Just add the cost of swaps every track weekend.

Or show your one of a kind GTwrx all waxed and clean at the local budget cars and coffee at the Walmart parking lot. Don't over rev it.

Makes perfect sense 👍

I think a mid engine Cummins with smoke stacks through back window would have been cooler and actually very reliable
