I've worked through every dark scenario on how to screw by brother in law over. aside from the immorality of it. screwing people over opens up vulnerabilities and lets them screw you back.

the estate is a mess. going to be months sorting it out. i now look upon Pontius Pilate with envy. can't wait to wash my hands.

FWIW, when my mom was handling my grandmother's estate, my aunt was pretty hurting for the money, even though she had taken a loan out against her eventual inheritance and hadn't paid it off. But still, there was plenty of money coming back to my mom and my aunt. My mom thought it was all settled, sent her sister what was left of her half after deducting for the loan balance, and then months later, it turns out their estate lawyer had made an error and there was a sizable tax bill due. Of course, my aunt had already spent everything, while my mom didn't even need her half. But she was able to get my aunt to agree to kick in her half of the tax bill.

At least the child support got paid, and he did not get to waste it all.

Good thing he didn't pop down to Columbia to buy big at wholesale prices with his new found wealth.

My wife had an uncle with addiction problems.
When he got a meaningful (not massive) inheritance, he enjoyed being generous.
Very generous.
He had never had the means to gift to those important to him, even simple things like taking family out for a nice dinner.
Though he never invested for future growth, the money did improve his happiness for a time.
He's gone now. Complications from alcohol abuse.
In this (rare) case, the inheritance did improve his life.
Didn't totally transform it, but his last years were probably the happiest, finaly being able to express gratitude to his friends and family.
