From New Zealand, EV Flat Battery Rescue Service:
The Automobile Associations first EV charging breakdown van celebrates 1st birthday The AA’s first electric vehicle charging breakdown van has been on the road in Wellington, NZ for more than a year – giving EVs a boost at the roadside 2 to 3 times a month on average. The AA Battery Service van, which launched in late July 2020 to help curb ‘range anxiety’, is fitted with a lightweight EV charger. In 20-25 minutes, it enables enough charge to drive up to 10 kilometres so AA Members can get home or to a nearby charging station. |

Whats wrong with hybrids? Is that's the best of both worlds. Elec cars create range anxiety otherwise none existing in traditional or hybrid vehicles. After this, I love Toyota more then ever.

That is a question I’ve often asked myself. Last fall we bought my wife a Lexus UX 250 H. It is a hybrid that you can run on the battery for about 25 miles. Round-trip for my wife to work is about 20 miles. So most of the time she is running on the battery in the city. When she goes to visit her mom she gets around 42 mpg and no range anxiety.

I don't keep up with EV tech, but for quite a while I've been thinking that hybrid is the way to go, at least currently and in the near term.

If you don't have reliable charging infrastructure near the areas you frequent most then hybrid or traditional ICE is certainly less effort.
I'm 1 year into EV ownership and don't have range anxiety anymore because I'm familiar with how my vehicle consumes energy in different situations and the availability of nearby charging options. I suspect it's like this for most people who have charging options they're comfortable with nearby. That said, it was a little bit of a nail-biter when this happened as I pulled into the driveway after driving 300 miles home. ![]()

I think the point is that with current technology, having 100 percent of cars being EVs is not the answer. I completely agree. Before the flame wars start, be advised that we currently own an EV, and use it for errand running, and relatively short trips. Charging stations are sparse out in Eastern Washington. Once EVs can do things like my '87 Carrera (500-mile range, recharge to 100% in less than 10 minutes, "charging stations" everywhere), sure, all EV could make sense. In our current situation, hybrids truly seem to the best solution.

I think plug in hybrid make the most sense if you have one car. Since most of my driving is less than 100 miles with 1 or 2 people and minimal luggage, a 2 seat pure electric sports car would cover most of my driving needs while simultaneously putting a driving smile on my face. On days when I need to drive farther or carry more, I’ll take the truck. For me, a hybrid has one big draw back in still needing oil changes. When is the electric Cayman going to be available?

I will gladly go back to an EV once I'm able to purchase an EV pickup at a reasonable price. I absolutely loved my Model 3 Performance and never really experienced range anxiety.
