https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1018365-sbu12-their-navy-offshore-race-boats.html Even the drives are BMW. Dad had a bunch of 180hp and 220hp engines with low hours. I’m pretty sure we put in the 220s. The drives were the same for both engines. He still has a pile of drives at his house.

It won't. It's more of a fuel efficiency boost at moderate speeds; all the real fast stuff runs surfacing drives/props.

A friend had a lMagnum when we lived in Atlanta. We used to take it up to Lake Lanier and that little boat with a huge Mercury on the back, made it seem like we’re going 100 miles an hour.
We were going all out one time and we went under somebody’s wake. Our sunglasses, hats and beers went flying off. Lots of laughing after that one. The yellow boat is a splitting image of his. It’s a Flat bottom tunnel hull and his uncle used to race it. ![]()

We used to blast air at the prop to help cavitation so it would spin up faster as the start was a dead engine start Engine was a Mercury, 3ltr, 2 stroke that revved to 10k

Captain Ahab, too bad you did not have a toroidal prop on that thing.
I like fast boats and all, but I have to know. How fast are the bass that the boats have to go 75 mph? I had a freind who had a blown Chrysler hemi in a little 18' boat. It was a ridiculous two seater, all ate up with motor. I loved it.

I thought you were going to talk about drag boats! Or basically boats with big giant car engines in them! There’s a few around here on the lake, they are stupid fast!
I went to high school with a friend whose dad had one of those, and he would take it out on Friday nights and cruise the strip with it trying to show it off and get girls…. Lol

Tobra, they go pretty quick, 0 to 60 under 2 secs, top speed 150ish mph and cornering at 6-7g
Don't have much offshore powerboat experience other than going out on a test with the Victory Team in Dubai when I visited them about a job. Was in slow support boat and witnessed the race boat go past at 160mph from about the distance of half a football field away. Race boat was 30 something foot long Class 1 offshore catamaran, 3.5 tons, powered by 2x 600bhp V8's This thread needs pictures...

I had a raysoncraft ski/drag boat that had a 1500 hp blown ak hemi in it when built
ran 150mph in the 1/4 mile the hemi was pulled for a car cuda with numbers close to the car date then sold for 1/4M I got the boat and V drive prop trailer ect and doubled my money on it but my boats are slow sail boats most without motors even on long trips |

I have a 19 ft speedboat with a force ( mercury) 85 HP.
Bought it running, fixed it up a little to try to get it "lakeworthy" but the thing would idle fine at the dock, run flat out for a mile and die then it would fire a bit but no power. no overheating , I dont think the carbs are an issue. compression seems fine. I think it's a bad coil or trigger and I got some spare parts, but it's been a project in wait. I rebuilt the cylinders as it has a hydraulic lift. in the meantime the raccoons ate my seats.. the trailer had brakes so I rebuilt those ...it's probably still worth what I paid.. I bet it can really gobble up gas fast. I saw some videos on checking the stator coil and trigger, I think they get warm after a few minutes then go open circuit. for 5 years Ive been meaning to revisit the issue.. we had a shallow V speedboat like the one above that 911 rod posted.. it had no windshield, a "cobra" my dad and brother took a course and made it from a mold. we used to ski behind it as kids with just a 18 HP OMC. it wasn't fast but man we had a lot of fun. once I caught a nice fish that just happened to jump at the right time, talk about fish stories.. but it did happen and it was yummy too. with no windshield it landed on the bow and slid right up into the boat.. we have a 21 ft sailboat , my dad restored it but it's been a bit neglected , some is a bit weathered but it's a nice boat and getting quite rare. probably from about the 30's or so.. professionally built with the old techniques. lots of clinched nails etc. square nails. the thing is all Honduran mahogany. Im in the midst of selling it to a carpenter who is retiring. hard to make a price so I think we will just et him have a deal on it... its really hard to put a price to it as it's so rare its hard to find any parallel comparison. It's a beautiful boat but I found I dont really care too much for sailing. Best it gets loved. Last edited by Monkey Wrench; 02-14-2023 at 09:41 AM.. |

A friend of mine used to write all the technical documentation for Mercury. He works for Harley Davidson now. Head of service for the US region.

Force outboards were made from parts piles left over from OMC. Inexpensive and it showed. Especially when they aged. I'd be surprised if any run anymore.
Mariner outboards are the ones that were Mercury with different colours.

this one will idle and run fine, I dont think it's run enough to loose compression. it will idle ok If I put he headphones and a hose on it but it died under use as soon as I could really apply power once I got it in the lake. hard to test it under load in the back yard.
I think the issue is that the coil under the flywheel is encased in plastic and the plastic shrinks and cracks, breaking the winding. I found some used parts and set them aside meaning to check deeper into the coils. I guess the stator and trigger. it has 3 separate ignition coils and I have spares. a mechanic also said I should lube the parts for the advance as they can stick because the grease dries up. i think it gets warm and quits because it looses spark. They are extremely inefficient so far as mileage is concerned, but If it gets me out to go fishing without conking out and leaving me to come back with my 4 Horse Ill be happy. i dont think it's ever seen salt water and the prop looks ok. I bought a new impeller but I don't think I ever installed it. I could hold my hand over the head when it wouldn't start so I dont think it's overheating. it didn't seem to get hot. |

Vinny, absolutely love those photos, vintage offshore stuff is so badass. What engines/drives did they have? Black and white one looks like Kiekhaefer/SSM drives.

When I first got the boat, It had TRS drives. Then I switched to SSMIIs. Night and day! I ran staggered 496s. Ran around 90. That pic where I'm next to the blue and white Scarab coming out of a turn, about a minute later, I cooked a motor. Pretty pissed since I was running second... The black and white boat is Betty Cook's KAAMA .
