Shared on a Faceplant page.

An excellent example of a classic steel frame with modern components (Campagnolo Record 11 speed).
Note the seat post. This frame is about 30 to 40mm too small for the rider. Back in the day "a fist full of seat-post" was the standard.

Carbon grip paste works well in Carbon frames.

•. Carbon posts in carbon frames also get stuck. You MUST remove them on occasion and re-apply the paste.

• I just binned a CF seatpost that had gotten a chip somehow and then proceeded to delaminate and splinter.

• I've also destroyed a few alloy posts in the process of removing them from a steel or alloy frame.

I like that red Colnago, but I'm enough of a purist that, to my eye, box section alloy rims and ss spokes really enhance the look.
(but that is a tiny frame, and tiny frames always look a little disproportionate with 700c wheels, no matter what the finish)

flatbutt 05-09-2023 03:56 PM

Oh man we finally had a GOR-G-US day so I geared up and took off. I underestimated my readiness for upper 70s temps. 15 miles kicked my flat butt. Came home, sat down, passed out for an hour.

The owner didn't say but I'm guessing that's a 49cm frame (seat post center to center).

I do love these old time trial bike! :)

That radial laced front wheel would look the business on the Colgnago with a radial/3-cross on the rear in SS. He loves that Campy front hub. Looks so big on that tiny front wheel.

American Classic seat post are known to break at the seat clamp but that's such-a pretty seat post. I liked them for their light weight with that, it means reliability issues.

Real experts in cycling, I read the article https://www.bikethesites.com/can-you-ride-a-bike-while-pregnant/ but I don't know if I can be trusted, my husband constantly persuades me to ride.

Yep it's real :(

That was from the Faceplant page "American Built Frames Only !" (It's a private group)

sc_rufctr 05-13-2023 05:57 PM

So anyway...

My *"German GF" gave me a "LeMond Revolutionary Trainer". Her ex-husband walked out on her about 3 years ago and left it behind. I've always used rollers but hey it's free so why not? The frame is a classic Vetta (Italian) from the late 80s. A friend gave it to me because the seat post has a small crack at the base. It's fine as a stationary trainer but I wouldn't trust it on the road. I had planned to replace the seat tube but never got around to it.

Just mocking up at this stage. The frame will be stripped, prepped and painted soon.
- That's a Shimano 105 11 Speed cassette.

(* Not actually my GF, more like my little sister. I helped her get back on her feet after he husband left. She moved from Germany to Australia so she could marry her ex-husband and I was the photographer at their wedding. I'm not really sure why but somehow I felt responsible for her. My real GF is a rather nice Aussie Lady ;))

I prepped the frame for paint yesterday... Just plain white with no decals.
(Por15 for the base followed by Por Top coat).

I'm still waiting on some nicer weather before I paint... Maybe tomorrow with a bit of luck.

Meanwhile my friends fixie. Just about perfect IMO (drop bars and a straight stem would get it over the line).

I don't know, Pete. Maybe I am too much of a traditionalist, with not a hipster bone in my body. I can't see why anyone would ride that a fixed gear bike in traffic or just for fun. I have to admit, I did it through winter but I had a front brake and I needed to spin during off season but iun no way I ride that to have coffee or just for fun. Especially those who are riding track bikes with steep angles.

herr_oberst 05-17-2023 03:27 PM

I've got a s/s. (I think fixies are scary, but Pete's friends' blue - DeRosa? is very pretty!) I pieced mine together because I needed a crap bike to ride 3/4 of a mile twice a day 4 times a week that could be left locked to a pole on the sidewalk in any kind of weather. I think the furthest I took it was five or ten miles. It's fun, and then it's not, almost like a light switch.

LEAKYSEALS951 05-17-2023 04:12 PM

A "Fixie" like that is great in an empty car park... and that's about it.

My comments were about the design and execution. Clean build with simple lines.

I like the idea of a flatter stem, (maybe 10mm longer, too,) but instead of drop bars I'd be inclined to look for an interesting flat bar, maybe something like the old "moustache" bars that Bridgestone used back in the day...

I've been riding track bikes in the local velodrome since I was a kid. Would I use them on the road?
- I do but only on "my track". It's basically a flat ring road near my house.

I like these. Great invention ;)

Not for the bike I posted but these would be really cool for updating an older single speed mountain bike. Note flat bar controls.

"Surly Corner Bar" (chrome moly not alloy)

I love the white industries ratcheting cog, but I went cheap. I bought a kit that has spacers to replace cogs on a freehub. I've got an 11 and a 12 on, since I had to make do with a bike that has vertical dropouts which required me to make a tensioner from an old derailleur.

I rode a fixed gear bike for two winter seasons spinning around the RoseBowl / golf course all by my lonesome self and went on a few group / training rides with it way back in the late 80s. Being young, dumb, and the pros do it so why not me /us, right? I could have cause serious wreaks to myself and others who need to go back to work the next day after the training ride. Herr's pic of the single speed was exactly what I did only I had a cog but always had brakes.

ugh..

I need to practice more. I eventually got the holes drilled in the right spot (the first time thank G)

With silver brazing I got it too hot and had a problem seeing the silver flow. I had to get out the dremel and clean it up and used some body filler to make it smooth before I shoot the primer.

I spread the filler with a finger. I wore a latex glove and poured a little alcohol on my fingers first to help smooth it out. Its all sanded now and ready for paint.

I'm still unsure about where to put the pump. I'll probably get a short pump and put it above the new water bottle mounts.

Frame pump? People still use those things? Co2 is my friend.

I have tubless now, but on my other bikes, I run only these tubes https://www.amazon.com/Tubolito-Unisexs-Gravel-Bicycle-Orange/dp/B093H7SGS5?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=ARIZE2JCT3XTI

Super light, resist puncture much better then traditional rubber tubes. DId I mention it is super light so you can be faster.

My stationery frame is now painted. (POR 15 base coat with POR 15 Top Coat)

I'll let it sit for a few days and then start the build.

Have a great one!

I'm in Paint Hell right now. I tried lacquer paint, primer and clear and its a joke. I let each coat dry a day and I can peel it off with my nails. I'm stripping the frame back to bare metal and going to use a single stage enamel; paint with catalyst. I still have some green from my 911 and it may still be good.

frustration

I'll paint something every five years and its like I have to relearn how to do it every time. This is the first time using lacquer on a car/motorcycle/bicycle, and the last time.

sc_rufctr 05-23-2023 02:19 PM

Well my attitude is... "How hard can it be?" I apply that to most things in life.

With paint it only has to be about 95% good. Paint is never 100% perfect and polishing/finishing can get you very close.

flatbutt 05-23-2023 02:53 PM

Tangent alert. Do you guys track your performance? My Edge 130 measure aerobic / anaerobic performance. No matter how much sprinting I do the computer says "No anaerobic benefit".

How do you guys get anaerobic?

otto_kretschmer 05-23-2023 02:55 PM

no,

I don't have a bicycle computer because all it tells me is I'm getting slower the older I get.

sc_rufctr 05-23-2023 03:12 PM

The only thing I do is ride every day (except when it's raining). The less distractions the better.
- All the smart stuff looks good & if I was a pro I'd have and use it all but... I'm not and I'm not getting any younger.

Regardless at the end of the day nothing works better than doing the work.

I get that but I must monitor my heart so I don't ... you know...die. My Dr says that I need to get anaerobic but dang that's gonna kill me. I get my heart rate up to 140 on some climbs but rarely on the flats. Maybe I'm over thinking this stuff.

In your unique case you're not over thinking it.

The best advice I can give you as a non doctor: Don't do ANYTHING you're not comfortable with.

There's no need to push yourself to improve your fitness. Just daily movement and not over eating alone puts you in the top 5% of fitness in the general population.

What I find astonishing in a lot of young people: The size of their arses. Truly astounding.
