Sunglasses

Well, since my corrective eye surgery , I have to wear high quality sunglasses, which I have been doing since my very first pair of Ray-Ban wayfares since the 80s, and still have a few pairs from the 80s, but sadly my original black pair blew up in the glove box in my Black SC

I have also been a fan of Vuanets since and also have some from the 80s and like the Ray-Ban wayfares, last have the new versions of what I wore in the 80s. Since Oakley was a sponsor of mine when I was chasing points on the National BMX circuit, I still have original Oakley Eye shades, Blades and Razor Blades, as well as modern versions including my shooting glasses.
Speaking of shooting glasses, these are the Bees Knees.
I do have several other brands including, of course, a few sets of Porsche Design .
For swimming and beating I tried and like Shady Ray's, for surfing, the beach, swimming and trail and track rides, they are light, look good and have a unbelievable warranty and to top that off, every pair you buy, a portion goes to Veterans .
So I guess you can add sunglasses to the list of what Byron collects.

I'm old and don't give a crap what people think about how I look, so my sun glasses are on a leash since I take them off a lot to shoot pictures.

I have a couple of pairs of Maui Jim's that I loved before my eyes went bad. The optometrist said they can't put prescrip lenses in them. I may spring for new ones next time I get sunglasses though, I think they're worth it.

When I was in my 20's and 30's (no kids) I spent money on stylish and name brand sun glasses. Never lost them and they lasted a while. Once kids arrived it was gas station/CVS/Target sunglasses for 20 years. Now that the kids are grown I am back to good shades, Ray Ban Caravan Square is my choice. I keep a couple cheap gas station glasses for projects around the home.

I’m not particular about my sunglasses. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $20 for a pair.

I on the other hand get headaches with those $20 glasses that are sometimes warped. I still have a 20 year old Ray Ban made in Italy before all the Luxottica consolidation. Lately I've been on a Made in USA binge, or at least, assembled in USA so I tried Gatorz (warped out of the box), and I have a Randolph USA pair, very similar to American Optical.

I have Wiley X shooting glasses as well.

Costa's, same pair for going on 15 years. And by same pair I mean the same style, I have had a few pairs and even sent some back in for new lenses etc.

I have good ones for driving that are polarized with glass lenses and an older pair with plastic lenses for yard work, camping, etc.

I bought a pair of polarised Dirty Dog sunglasses because they looked nice.

They are fantastic. Excellent optically as well. The annoying thing is for a bit more ($20 or something) I could have had two of the same but didn't. I wish I had as they are way better than my Ran Bans that I keep in the other car.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if you need Rx sunglasses, then many of the sunglasses we’ve talked about (Maui Jim, Vuarnet, Oakley, etc) are out of contention, because opticians can’t make lenses for them - right?

I’ve had luck getting Rx lenses put in RayBan Wayfarers, though.

No, I have both Oakley and Maui Jim prescription sunglasses.. The Oakleys (Half Jacket 2.0XL) have easily replaceable lenses.. you can get just lenses from Oakley or from a place like Sport RX

This is my current rotation. The green lens Aviators get worn the most. I've owned them for close to 20 years and I bought them second hand for $40.

This may look like "too many" but some of these are more than 30 years old.

Every time my buddy loses his sunglasses, he pulls up to the bag drop at the golf club and tells them he lost his glasses. They pull out a drawer on their stand and he picks out a pair. They usually have 15 or 20 from which to select.

My eyecare insurance pays for prescription glasses once per year, or two pairs of non prescription sunglasses up to $250 each.

I want high base (wrap) glasses and found a hack. My insurance doesnt own oakley so i cant get them, but The local glasses store sells the military oakley line… and those are covered. So i get two pair of stupid looking oakley every year, the prizm maritime, then i get special reading lenses made for them by revant.

The prizm maritime turn out to be fantastic on the water, dark enough and polarized, cut glare - very comfortable. Theyre the same ones that the local cbp wear to interdict kayaks that may be carrying weed across the sea border from bc, eh.

I'm "considering" these Persol's.

These would be for formal day wear only. Things like visiting a winery for lunch with friends or a garden wedding (removed during the nuptials). I really like them because they have an "Old School" flat lens.

If you need 'progressive bifocal' lenses for your prescription....not all sunglasses are able to be made that way.
My last pair of Zenni's sunglasses were only available as single vision.

Have a couple of pairs of Ray Ban Wayfairers for use when I don't need the prescription (I have a very mild prescription) For running and cycling I have a few different pairs. At some point I am moving all to prescription... getting older now... lol.

I have astigmatism and do not absolutely need distance correct but I do absolutely need correction for seeing things up close. Otherwise, reading is impossible. I have both prescription progressive and non-prescription sunglasses.

I understand what polarized lenses are and the phenomena they cause, but I also know they are vastly superior to non-polarized lenses. Specifically, at filtering glare. Glare, more than brightness, is what we wear sunglasses to tame.

I am another Vuarnet fan. Certain yellow lenses, similar to what we see on Byron's homely face (just kidding, Byron) above, actually make a grey day look sunny and improve the detail we can see in those conditions. I have been meaning to get some. For driving in the PNW where our two main weather conditions are Rain and Fog.

I do know wayfairers can be done with Rx, but of course at the Lux$$$otica price. I have a decent pair in a warm-ish grey and polarized glass that I'm happy with.

I'd love some Randolphs in Rx but with my -4ish Rx those little wire rims might make things seem awkward. For now I use those with contact lenses
