Throughout my 10 year stint as a Certified Instructor, who is in the left lane was never one of the 39 points I’d make during my 12 minute Demonstration Drive.

These threads continue to ignore the root cause….training. When drivers know better, they’ll do better.

But hey, let’s keep the nonsense going.

Sadly, I'm not in charge of training or creating the regulations and requirements for training. I feel like my driver's ed training and driving with my dad was pretty good (Dad was a cop when I was born, so he likely had a little extra training). So as "peers" of the folks, all we can do is gripe about it.

Steve, thank you. You have precisely made my point.

You've been behind the wheel for over 45 years ( WAG ) using only "Drivers Ed training" and "my Dad was a cop, so he had extra training".

And we're all supposed to believe that'll produce Safe, Effective and Harmonious driving among the masses?

Every driver on the road should have Continuing Education requirements every 10 years, minimum.

Me included.

Because that Training wouldn't specifically be for me, or you. It's for everyone, us included.

Because when Drivers know better, they'll do better. And when more Drivers operate within established and refreshed guidelines, we all Drive better.

Or, instead, let's just keep this game going, cuz bicthing is more funner than fixin', yo.

Keep a safe distance, wait for the right lane to clear, change lanes and pass him. Is it the safest and right thing to do, well probably not according everything we've been told.

You're absolutely correct, unless the highway density is akin to I-75 in SWF. In that case, it's the person lollygagging in the left lane that's the bully. Instead of moving to the right, speed unchanged, they force everyone to pass them by threading a limited opening using excessive speed.

The net is that loitering in the left lane creates an unsafe situation for everyone, including the loitering driver. Just move over. Be at least as courteous as you want others to be.

I don't sit on their butt if I can pass on the right, but I pass like an F1 car at the end of straight. There are freakin signs every mile or two explaining the concept.

I find that if I come up fast in one of my Porsches they get out of my way for some reason.

If it's just a left lane camper and there's open space to their right, then yes, I'm about 50/50 for them to move over.

A closely related issue is that if it's a car that's passing a vehicle in the left lane by 1mph, there's a very good chance that they'll continue to pass at 1mph and then move over once they get past (often times very close/cutting off the car that they just passed in the process).

If I'm passing someone and another car comes up behind me, I'll speed up to get past and over so the car approaching from behind doesn't have to slow down to wait for me (maintain the flow of traffic).

So not exactly a left lane camper. I was taught in driver's ed in HS to get passes completely quickly, and not hold up other folks, vs some folks thinking "I'm going the speed that I want to go and nothing you can do can change/affect/impact me doing what I want to do how I want to do it."

And then there is mom .... and believe me .... I've tried .

If she is getting on a city street, two lanes each way (speed posted is 45), traffic flows between 55-60. .. if she has to make a left-hand turn 5 miles down the road .... she's gonna "park" in the left lane for five miles, holding up traffic the whole way...

DonDavis .... do you make "house calls"?

I've tried .... and failed

Bruh, that’s classic Powdered Butt Syndrome in full swing.

Track driving would fix the “5 mile” example.

But I hear you. I really avoid saying anything to anyone. They’ll ask if they want my opinion. And they do at times.

Telling someone they are doing something wrong, that they’ve been doing successfully for years, is dicey at best.

It’s way too easy to hurt them.

Luckily my wife is a very good and snappy driver. On the long trips getting out of CA, I sometimes will stay on the passing lane for a couple miles while day dreaming doing well over the speed limit passing everyone on the right. My wife will snap at me and say, you always talked about sitting on the #1 lane and now you are the same idiot. I move immediately even though there's isn't anyone around.

Our problem is trucks with trailers must drive 55, while traffic flow is 75-80 so every one and their soccer moms are sitting on the #1 lane passing all the trucks doing 70-75 (speed limit is 70) holding up everyone. There are lot of trucks around here so as soon as there's an opening, everyone squeeze through and floor it and get back up to 80. You have no idea how many times I am cruising at 85-90 passing everyone on the right. Its a rat race out there.

About 25 years ago, I was sent to traffic school for doing stupid stuff on the road. This instructor always start class with everyone telling what they did to get caught. Lots of speeders, stop sign rolling, illegal u turn folks. This youngish lady, you would never have guess that she drove a motor home. You get where this is going? She was ticketed for holding up more then 5 vehicle without using turnouts allowing others to pass. Everyone clapped so hard that she just sat without ever bother to ever turn herself around. I bet she wouldn't so that again.

I feel embarrassed if I hold up faster vehicles.

This thread reminded me of an introduction I gave at a dinner at the county Council on Aging.

This time of year for the next 4 months is a deadly time for me….if I drive with my wife while she is driving. She is obsessed with Halloween and Christmas decorations. Even if she is driving, she will turn her head 180 backwards to look at decorations. 90% of the time, her eyes are on decorations and not on the road. In the off season, it’s dogs.

If she is a passenger in my car, she screams out “look at that”. It’s usually a cute dog or pumpkin or something. But we live in a place with a heavy deer population so I think she is warning me of a deer or maybe a child on a skateboard flying out or something…..this puts me in a sour mood and results in Apple Watch alerts regarding my heart rate

And being a passenger with a serial tailgater is terrifying.

Generally speaking, I think we are seeing more and more left lane campers (and other bad behavior) because we are becoming less and less "aware" as a society. People only care about themselves, not about how their behavior is impacting the world around them. This is merely a symptom.

LOVE the jackholes that pull to the right AFTER you pass them.

Guy- that probably means they were not aware of their error, but when you passed them they thought "oh, reckon I should move over".

Now, just imagine if someone had an idea about fixing that....lets see, uh...nah, keep bicthing instead.

Nothing to fix here.

And the people that drive with their dog sitting in their lap and hanging out of the window. I’m seeing that more and more.

I hate that. But, better than those that ride around on their motorcycle with their dog sitting on their gas tank, or 5 year old on the back. These people are criminals.

20 years ago when I was spending most my time on the Long Island Expressway, seeing drivers eating a bowl of cereal while driving was a daily occurrence. Besides the gross mushy cereal issue, what kind of a moron must you be to not spend the 4 minutes eating the cereal at home. My experience being around heavy populated areas has lead me to believe that here are very few intelligent humans.
