It happened to me fairly recently - it took about 4 lines of text before my "wrong number" wrote that I seemed nice and "she" was new in town and did I want to get a drink. >delete/block<
And, boom like that, thanks to my new friend, I will never, ever respond to an unknown number ever again. They get ruthlessly deleted and blocked and it's too damn bad if it's a message that would benefit me...

My first response, text or call, is usually "Who is this?"
The other day I was distracted. Got a call, "Is Patrick there?" I said, "Yes."

I think there's a setting on most phones where you can say "block any calls that aren't from a contact." That's too far for me since it could be someone from work, a Dr office, the mechanic that's got the car, etc.... There are so many random calls that could be real, that I can't block ALL calls/texts. But I don't answer calls that I don't recognize if I'm not expecting a call or text. If they don't leave a VM, they get blocked. If their text is BS, they get blocked.

Understand many of us use our cell phones as a business phone. Potential clients, customers or colleagues may call to begin the professional relationship. So we need to vet some of the incoming calls.
Example, This is Dr Najarian, would you please have Dr. Smith call me at his earliest convenience about a mutual patient. I may not recognize Dr. Smith’s phone number when he calls. That’s why I answer my phone. “

I never answer if I don't know the number.
Answering that text, now they know you are a valid number and you will get repeat attacks.

Blocking a phone spammer's "number" is worthless. They are faking the number they are calling from just like their fake stories they make up.
Just delete it and move on.

I'd be flattered. No one ever bothers to catfish me.
Come to think of it. Half a lifetime ago some nutty chick used to phone me at 3:00am and say in a slow drawn out voice "Hello Dickhead, how are you?" I tried to get her talking but she never really said much. After I said "Please don't hang up, you're my best friend..." I think she thought I was more of a nutter than she was and never called again LOL |

The only numbers I do block are legit. Naw.... I don't want to sell my houses or land and I will NEVER buy insurance (or anything else) from a phone call .... Even those are non-stop .... calls, texts, and US mail. I reckon it works for some .... but an instant "turn off" and will never work on me. |

I get texts from some supposed company offering me business loans of 1/4 million or so. Yea, right.
Some total stranger is just going to loan me a large hunk of money. Those are deleted and reported as spam. #1, I don't need a business loan. #2, I only do banking with a local owned bank that I can walk into some bankers office and talk face to face. #3 if I did I would expect to meet the banker face to face, and sign papers in the office after a through credit check and I only give that info to real banks that follow the FDIC laws.

I get these every so often. I generally try to get them to engage in some sort of illegal behavior. One time they got big mad because I was accusing them of not paying up their share of the coke I was buying for the party.
It's hard to tell if they're actual bots or sometimes people, the reactions I got out of that one didn't seem in line with what a bot would produce, especially all of the swearing and threats.

There's a guy that does old radio and TV repair videos that is just as well known for his quips as he is at repairs. I know this guy and he's been around L.A. for a long time and is really hip. He came to be in the Hollywood scene more or less after the Laurel Canyon years. More like the Madonna years, so he's been there.
You can hear the hipness if you've been there. Anyway, he takes calls while working and just says one thing over and over, "Where's my money?" All kinds of responses as it disrupts the script. Gets plenty of FU's too which he enjoys because he knows he wasted their time and got their goat too. |
