Five gun is very good. The trick is to chew half a piece, so you don't have a giant mass of gum in your mouth.

Same thing happened to me. I asked the dentist if I should stop chewing gum. He said good crowns can handle gum, and that crown was going to come off sooner or later anyway due to decay of the tooth under the crown. I was lucky I didn't swallow it. He glued it back on temporarily and we made an appointment for a replacement.

When one of my co-workers quit smoking, she expressed concern about the amount of mints she was consuming. I suggested sugarless gum and it helped her kick the habit.
