Seiko automatic

My first automatic watch. It’s a seiko save the ocean special edition with some nice touches. Sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert and a super neat face that gives the impression of looking up from deep water at some manta rays swimming by. I believe it’s referred to as the dark manta as there is a lighter version. Case is called the samurai for its sharp angles. This model is a king samurai thanks to sapphire and date bubble. Case kinda reminds me of the mitsubishi starion from the 80s. 4R35 movement seems to be about 2 min fast after 10 days give or take.

I love that it represents no batteries or internet connection. A small link to a better time.

Seiko makes a great automatic...Grand Seiko makes an even better automatic. My budget is Orient.

I own a few "fancy" watches, but I always find myself usually wearing vintage Seiko autos. I have a "few" of them. My favorites and the Seiko Pogues and the Seiko SOG's. Both with pretty incredible back stories. Prices have been climbing for both but especially the SOGs. But today I am wearing a newer deep blue Seiko PADI diver watch with a blue leather strap. Not automatic, but actually solar powered. Super bright lume which I always appreciate. My only real complaint with it is that I wish the bezel was bi-directional.



CHeck out hte Seiko Rally Divers from the late 60's. Very cool looking automatics. Seiko did some newer models with similar bezels a few years back. They are cool too, but not as cool as the originals.

cant go wrong with Seiko anything really, especially a diver.

I am wearing a 70 year old hand wound watch today, so none of that fancy automatic technology.

Tough to beat a Seiko diver. Probably got the NH35 movement which is highly reliable and accurate. Awesome watch. I bought this microbrand diver a few years back on a flash sale for under $100. Seiko NH35, ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown! Aragon Divemaster 42.

Edit: oops, just noticed you said it has a 4R35 movement. Pretty much the same as the NH35.

Seikosha makes very nice watches. Gotta love the lume on the diver's watches! That GMT is gorgeous.

My Seiko Pepsi watch from 1974. My cousin bought it when he was stationed in Korea. My brother got the orange dial face. And my 25+ year old Rolex Submariner.

I haven’t worn either watch in the last three or four weeks.

still have my Seiko automatic, i bought it with my first student loan. 1977.
works perfect. looks great.
OTOH? i threw my Tag H in the garbage. lasted 6-7 years they wanted 800 bucks to repair that POS.

I foolishly bought a Tag (foolishly as i really didn't have the $$) when i was in college many moons ago. Stopped working and just gave up on it as the styling was dated and quartz just isn't interesting to me.

These Seiko watches do seem to be a nice balance of feel/quality and price. Paid $350 for the manta new via ebay. Unfortunately the green GMT (and a few others i dig) are about 3x's as much. At 4 digits i start to wonder if I might eventually wish i'd tried a Tudor or something like that. I see the Black Bay coming up used for low-mid 2k frequently. Haven't seen one in person to tell how much i'd like it though.

A shooting buddy of mine has a Sea Dweller and it really is a beautiful watch in person. Somewhat understated and a cool helium valve that is less obtrusive than the Omega version. But with Omega being a $4k + proposition and Rolex divers being 2-3x that i suspect i'll just read about those rather than experience them.

I own about 4 Seiko automatic divers, all very nice watches. Unfortunately I haven't been wearing them, Wife gave me an Apple watch for Valentine's and that's been getting all the use lately. I like some of the features but don't care for the tracking and frequent interruptions (stand up, move around, "you closed all of your exercise rings! Now stand up again!").

I'll probably wander back to analog for awhile. One thing about the Seiko, some are assembled in Japan and some Korea and Indonesia. Look for the "J" in the model number, it might be more expensive but it denotes a Japan watch. Then you have to figure out the Turtle vs Sumo vs Samurai configuration, but all decent watches.

I have a Seiko Automatic that was my Dad's and he died 24 years ago. Time to pull it out!

This thread reminded me to advance the date on my Seiko.

I was going to post up a photo of my first Seiko 5, but it is missing. My brother found it when riding his bike, put a "found" ad in the paper, nobody claimed it. I don't remember how, but I talked him out of it. Maybe traded him something for it. It was on the ground because the pin broke that mounted the band. This would plague me for years. Eventually, when I got a job at a camera / computer store, I was able to order a box of 100. The pins would keep breaking and the watch would keep hitting the ground, and one day in the late 90's / early 2000's, the hit was hard enough and the watch quit working. At the time it wasn't worth getting fixed, and I bought a similar one. That one didn't last as long. The band didn't break on it, but it just quit.

Now I have a battery powered Seiko titanium. Much lighter, and if I don't wear it for a week, it's still running. I've probably had this one at least 15 years.

Spring bar failure is why the Brits came up with the NATO band. Break a bar, the watch stays on the wrist. Good military design, but I don't like how they look.

This is why I never messed with drugs, I have very little self control.
