What to do with Compact Discs

Fully entrenched with a nice streaming system (better than CD sound quality in most cases) and vinyl via a VPI Prime table and Manley phononstage.

Listed my CD player (Marantz CD6007) on USAM, but have no idea what to do with my CD collection. It’s mostly jazz and classical with some classic rock, etc. Open to suggestions. Have a small fortune invested but literally never use them at all. Could use the shelf space. Just drop them off at Goodwill?

I used 'Second Spin' online for most of mine....but I think they are no longer in business.
There are many others like them online now. Or Ebay.

You could try selling them (individually or in sets).

A lot of people are reverting back to physical media (including cassette tapes).

I put about 80% of my collection in one of these about 15 years ago. I threw away all the jewel cases, but saved the art in a seperate box. The box has migrated to my attic about 5 years ago when I lost the cd player in my old daily driver.

reduces space requirements by a huge margin. Threw away at least 150lbs of jewel cases

Selling them seems more trouble than it’s worth…especially individually.

Wish I had space. I'd happily buy a bunch of them. I ripped all of mine and they are in storage, but even then, I mostly listen to Pandora when I'm driving or in the office, not my ripped music.

Do you have a half price books nearby? They used to buy CDs. You wouldn't get much, but if you've got a ton, it might be decent pocket money. Then you'd be putting them back out there for someone that wants them.

Rip to very hig quality mp3 or maybe ogg - as lossless or high quality as possible in a open if not standard format and store on a NAS or other redundant drive system

Then sell or donate discs, or put on spindles and store

I would be very pleased to pay for shipping.

Of course, then I would have half a million CD’s I never listen to.

I'd keep 'em. Nothing like leafing through inlays.

Also some things to consider: are any of them NOT in the streaming service you have? Streaming = renting.

I presume you've ripped them all into some lossless format.

Don't sell the Marantz. It's a collectable.

Truth be told, it's exactly the CD player I'm looking to buy to go with my new to me Marantz PM6003.

Sell them to a local music store.

My local record shop will give you store credit and/or cash. Then you can get something you really want.

Are we talking hundreds of CDs, thousands?

I still have about 3,500 CDs but have about 3,500 LPs and I stream. Vinyl is my preference but I have a Rega Planet 2000 CD player that still works perfectly after being beat to hell for 24 years but with no CD players in my cars I find I am playing them less. so now I have 2 100 CD changers in my basement system. One is full with jazz only and the other is all live dead shows. In 6 months I will empty them and fill with all blues or whatever…..when I don’t feel like streaming or playing vinyl, I’ll just hit shuffle on the CD changer and drink some beer. I find I get a lot of use out of them this way….and I still collect the new release Dave’s Picks Dead shows so I guess I’m still attached to the CD world for a while. I would never ever sell them as I spent close to 40 grand or probably more for them goin back to 1985

If you have no interest in them, sell em to your local record shop. My shops here still buy them and sell them. Unfortunately you won’t get more than a buck or two for each but your shop will be thankful to have new inventory in their used CD section

You could have mine cheap…but it would cost $$$ to get it around the globe to you! You can run it as a CD transport only (that’s what I did) through a quality DAC. Seriously, get one locally if you can.

I probably have 300-ish and may go that route. I like the idea of tossing the jewel cases and filling a few books to save space and weight. Looking through them this evening, there are lots of memories on those shelves.

Different plastics used in CD's can make a difference whether they last or don't. It's many years though. I have way more cassettes that haven't been played hundreds of times. They are likely good for ripping but I lost interest in music.
