I would add that if any of you haven't seen "Band Of Brothers" it's well worth making the effort to watch it. It will make you appreciate those guys and gals even more.

Along the same vein as this thread, I will share my experiences with LtCol Robert Friend in the future.

LtCol Friend was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen AND went on to head the Air Force PROJECT Bluebook program.

Another remarkable person who succeeded despite tremendous adversity.

One cannot help but be humbled in his presence.

Rest in Peace LtCol Friend

So cool and thanks for sharing. It made me recall an encounter I had with an army Air Force vet I met at a historic air show the Hickory, NC airport about 10 years ago. If I remember correctly, he was a waist gunner on a B-24. I do recall him talking about Operation "Tidal Wave" aka "The Raid on Ploiesti". I had enough sense to record part of our encounter on my cell phone. I just need to find it amongst the stack of old phones in my closet.

Today marks 58 years since my Dad's passing. Born March 16, 1920 in Newark,N.J., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 14, 1939 and served for 20 years before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Afterwards, he worked as an employment counselor for the Virginia Employment Commission on Granby Street, downtown Norfolk.

I was 14 years old at the time of Dad's passing and remain grateful I was old enough to carry the memories of the amazing father he was.

Love you, Dad!

Thank you to all who posted to remind us that there is a heritage and lineage of honorable men and women who served our country. I pray that the seeds of those valiant folks of the past will germinate into a new generation who will do what is needed in times of crisis.

Baz, thanks for sharing your memory of your Dad. Some of us have been incredibly blessed with the people in our lives we strive to emulate.

My Dad was born on July 25, 1918, in Newark, NJ. Wouldn't it be something cool if they knew each other?

It would, Flatty - but highly unlikely since Dad "grew up" in Staten Island. I don't have the exact timeline handy but I know he wasn't in NJ that long after birth.
