Ok, traps set and we will be off to dinner in 30-40 min. I hope to get this bastard when we get back.

I just set traps on the exterior along the front, side and back of the house only to get an ear full from a couple of people walking their dogs about how inhumane rat traps are. One of them was in my face screaming at me because she really pissed me off telling me she will be back to remove them. WTF is wrong with these people so I told her I will have a big enough trap to trap her fat ass and her dog if she comes back tomorrow. She was not happy. My wife was right, I should have set the exterior ones late into the night. Its a rat what is with the obsession of a rat trap? I shouldn't have to live my life around others.

I know many of you live in large wooded areas or farm. How do you deal with the rat population? Bait?

Bastard rat is taunting me. Didn't touch the bait or slimjim, but left more crap in the living room and kitchen. Left a small puddle of yellow pee next to the ref. I want to scream. Wife is on my ass about getting rid of it.

My rat hunting preference is the old fashioned spring trap with peanut butter all around the trigger. Every once in a while they manage to eat the peanut butter without triggering it. I did get two with one trap once. Oh the joys of a house that backs up to a big field.

Edit: While waiting, I keep thinking about a little Have-a-Heart trap so you could look it in the eyes and smile as you slip it into the five gallon bucket filled with water.

I live on 5 acres and have been fighting rats since I moved here. Cats worked but they kill everything. Birds,lizards etc. I finally went to poison. I seem to be controlling them and that’s all one can expect.

thankfully, I have a "rat outside house" situation. I lost 90% of my tomatoes this year and last year. my house backs up to a creekside jogging trail. I see otters, and other stuff all the time. a rat is common. my neighbor is visually impaired, so he just lets his yard go. 1 foot deep debris..eff it..he can't see it. I hear rats scurrying under the leaf canopy all the time. just two days ago, a rat got into my garden shed and destroyed all my bagged fertilizer, and made a nest in my leaf vacuum bag after chewing it to shreds.

I thought about getting a new young female tabby cat, but then I WOULD HAVE A CAT.

so I have been using standard snap traps. I have old ones that are weathered from the elements and those are the successful placements. I think they just smell like wilderness. my bait of choice is the insides of a snickers bar, but to be honest...lately the cliche cheese offering has been way better.

I think I will run a GOOD NATURE unit year round eventually. there are successful YouTube videos just showing rat kills.

Update. That fker was a pretty good size one, about 8" body length. I had it pinned up against the wall after it set off the spring trap at around 1 last night. I rushed to see its crushed body but it took the bait and the trap was clean and no rat. Somehow he got downstairs and I hear my wife screaming my name and all four of us went rat hunting at wee hours of the day. Moved, searched everything I possibly could but saw no trace of any rat but we did see pee at various places. It was hiding up in the curtains. Smart 'lil bastard. We made a barrier and I has a piece of plywood and pinned it up against the wall, and gave it a few good whack with my leg hoping to injured it enough that I can grab it. No dice, but I did squeeze more piss out of him against the base board. Before we had a chance to get at it, he ran over my wife's foot and disappeared. wife and I went to breakfast this morning defeated and bought a few of the largest sticky traps. It said no bait needed but I am thinking of leaving some Slimjim in the middle to attract it. What do you think?

I've never had luck with the sticky traps. The snap traps like 70SAT posted, yeah those things do the trick as do the old school wood and wire ones. Really pack that bait in tight to get him to dig for more. One other trick I've used is only putting a little bait in two or three trap set slightly apart from each other. Let him get his confidence up and then WHAMMY.

Next time, try an elbow drop off the top rope. Seriously, this is why I still have one of those pump type Crossman air rifles. A few pumps at point blank would have done the trick. I used to do that to mice when they'd get behind my TV.

Btw, your description above made me envision that scene from Christmas Vacation where the squirrel was in the house.
