The Nevada DMV

Can you go to the AAA to get a car registered or renewed like you can in CA....NO.... Off to DMV Land then...BuenoDias, Si Habla Espanola....Welcome to the 3rd World....("This is Radio Clash" should be playing in the background to this post)

First you have to have your car smoged, no matter if it's new or not...and to be exempt it has to be 45 years old....in CA if's it's older than 1973 no smog test required.....well thats $16.99 and they are all over town....like Photo Huts....a machine, your vin # and a rod stuck up your tail pipe, and 5 minutes later you feel so much better because you passed the test.

Second you have to wait in a vehicle inspection line at the DMV where they check you Vin #, and give you a certificate.

Then upon entering the building you have to stand in information line to get a number so you can be waited upon, thats 30 minutes...in a never ending line. I told the DMV guy who waited on me in the information line..that if I had to do this for 40 hours a week for 40 years I'd blow my brains out now...a never ending line of halfwits, misfits and nitwits....he had a sense of humor he laughed...

Once you have your number, you get to wait till it's called....Oh thats just a 100 people ahead of you...just another 3 hours... Once your called they ask you for

Your Social Security Card

Your outa state Drivers License

Your current car Registration

Your Smog Certificate

Your proof of NEVADA Liability Insurance

Your vehicle inspection certification

Your outa state License Plates

And if you don't have anyone of those items it's back to the Information line....

Now that you've passed and all your paperwork is correct now they give you your license plates, registration and tell you to go stand in line to get your photgraph taken for your DL....thats just ...another 30 minutes and another 15 minutes waiting for them to process your picture to make your license...And this was all late on a Friday afternoon when all the DMV people were working quickly to go home for the weekend...imagine Monday mornining when they're all hungover...Welcome to the 3rd world I mean Nevada...

Hell, even us backwards, low-tech Aussies can simply mail off a cheque or pay with that internet-banking thingy! Actually, the last time I was at the DMV office, was to get the '89 registered and it was relatively painless by comparison.

I brought the car, roadworthiness certificate and proof of purchase, along with the customized plates (that are now sent out IN THE MAIL!! ) and had some gimp come out to eyeball the car. He was more interested in the car, asking me about it's power, handling and "chick-pulling" abilities. When I told him it'd tow 900lbs of "chicks" he laughed for about 20 minutes and stamped the paperwork.

There's one legal requirement in Nevada/California that I really like: Compulsary Liability insurance. It's optional here... Is it a nationwide requirement, or dependant on state legislature?

Liability insurance, use to be optional here. (it is state by state choice)

"Mandatory" just give the insurance companies free-reign to raise rates. People still drive without, so you are still are smart to carry "uninsured motorist" coverage.

So what good did more laws do us? . . .more cost, more paperwork (another card to carry, too) more "law", more tickets . . ..and absolutly zero increase in puplic safety. . . .but at least it cost us more, and we feel better about it all.

Hey tabs. Sorry for the crap you had to deal with. Just know, that was you last time EVER, that you will have to be there. (which one did you go to?). Now, this time next year, DMV will send you a card in the mail, that allows you to either register your car by Internet, or mail. You still have to get a smog, but wont need to send it in, since all the Smog places in town are now connected to DMV. Fill out the info, send it in, 10 days later, you will get your sticker in the mail. Same goes for the Driver Licence. In 4 years, you can either renew it on line, or fill out a card, and mail it in, they will just use your same picture, and send you a new one, in the mail.
