I just can't imagine the devastation. Denis, been thinking about you and others. I love CA and always wish I could afford to stay when I visit :-) We were in San Diego last year for one of my nephew's wedding and had an amazing time. Our Porsche group that usually hits Rennsport and the Lit Meet were texting back and forth this morning. No Lit Meet this year. Be safe everyone.

Hey now you can “take paradise and put up a parking lot.“ or move all those campers and RVs off the streets of downtown LA and put them in the vacant lots up in Palisades. I feel sorry for the people that have lost their homes, I really do. But I wonder how often they have looked at disasters that have occurred in the rest of the country and have just thought of us as “flyover country.“

44 degrees here...light rain showers and drizzle. Wish to hell I could send it to L.A.

Makes me wonder though... Where in the US is both desirable and 100% safe anyway ? Top of my head going around the country in no particular direction, I can think of areas with either: - crappy winters storms and lots of snow - No topography, no fun roads and crap winters - Hurricanes and flooding - Tornadoes - unbearable heat and critters - Earthquakes mudslides and fires - 1/2 the year of rain - not seeing the sun for months I mean, at some point you pick a spot and build something sustainable.. I think the way climate is changing (it's getting harder and harder to deny, isn't it?) there's gonna be $$$ into "cleverer" building and urban planning. |

My heart goes out to all affected. Lived through 911 and hurricane Sandy, but this is truly a disaster of monumental proportion.
Can anyone tell me if Manhattan Beach is threatened? I can't get hold of a friend.

As people we always try to figure out how to prevent a disaster from striking again. I think there are probably things that could be done better, maybe to at least help mitigate the impact and give firefighters better odds. But when all the factors come together like this, I don’t think there’s anything you can do to fully prevent fires from starting and/or spreading. It’s like stopping a tornado or hurricane, when Mother Nature is pissed you had better get out of the way.
What’s the current status guys? Are things getting under control or are the fires still active and spreading?

Thanks JYL, he finally surfaced, he's in DC but a family that was burned out is staying at his place in Manhattan Beach.

I'm thinking that there are some land developers wringing their hands ready to swoop in to purchase multiple parcels of land.

That was certainly an issue with the Hawaii fires. Local government blocked people from access or rebuilding, lots of people didn’t have insurance, then the vultures swooped in to buy prime real estate for pennies on the dollar. That situation felt like collusion, hope it doesn’t happen again in CA.

No fires up here near San Francisco, but this morning I was awakened by an earthquake. It was just a nearby 3.7, no big deal. But I thought to myself, that's all we need now. Speaking of SF, after 30,000 buildings went up in flames after the Big One in 1906, city leaders updated the water system extensively with large covered reservoirs all over the city. I'm expecting LA to do something similar.
Take heart, LA. If SF could rebuild an entire major city, so too can you rebuild all those beautiful neighborhoods. Although it will be a long process, I hope it goes reasonably smoothly. However, I'm afraid anything more I might say on the subject would belong in PARF. BTW, anything speeder might say about how great CA is, he's right.

damaged a scarce and invaluable firefighting asset (one of two super scoopers fighting the fires). It must have been a large drone to damage metallic aircraft structure. Grounding that airplane is a severe setback to the firefighting cause.

This lengthy FOX News video feed has great CA fire coverage of a MD-80 jet tanker releasing Phos-Check with helicopters dropping in support. Really superb coordinated effort. One of the best drops is right on a raging rugged hillside with homes on the top. Jet comes first and nails it perfectly. Helicopters in reserve put out hot spots. Mansion on top is saved. Scroll back about 2/3 and check it out. I think this is rolling feed, so it may be hard to find this scene.
