This belong to my grandparents. I want to say it’s from the 30s or 40s? The sharp end feels like it would go through quarter inch steel.

WHen I see that sort of thing, I think of old oil cans. But thinking about it longer, those cans of Hi-C fruit punch needed that sort of opener.

I can't even imagine a can of been that doesn't have some sort of pop-top!

When cooks invented the aluminum beer can, it was a pretty big deal.

Their brewery tour is still one of the best I’ve been on.

Key Innovations and Milestones:
1959: Introduction of the Aluminum Can:
Coors introduced the first recyclable aluminum beer can, a significant shift from the tin cans of the time.
Early 1970s: Nationwide Recycling Program:
Coors initiated the "Cash for Cans" recycling program, the first of its kind in the US.
Aluminum Pint Bottles:
Coors Light and other brands adopted aluminum pint bottles, featuring resealable caps and cold-activated graphics.
Sustainability Initiatives:
Coors has focused on sustainability, including achieving zero waste to landfill at its major breweries and reducing its carbon footprint.
Impact of Aluminum Innovation:
Improved Taste:
Aluminum cans helped preserve the taste of beer by preventing leaks and metallic flavors associated with tin cans.
Recycling Revolution:
The aluminum can's recyclability sparked a recycling revolution in the beverage industry.
Enhanced Portability:
Aluminum pint bottles offer a convenient and portable option for consumers, especially for outdoor activities.
Other Notable Innovations:
Cold Activated Graphics: Coors Light aluminum bottles feature cold-activated graphics that change color when the beer is cold enough to drink.
Grip Cans: Miller Lite and MGD introduced grip cans with tactile ink for better handling.
Punch Top Cans: Miller Lite and MGD also introduced punch top cans for a smoother pour.

I have a collection of a dozen or so old "church key" openers, for no good reason except that they are embossed with old beer brands - Papst Blue Ribbon, Schaefer, Rheingold, etc.

And perhaps because they bring back youthful memories of buying "value priced" beer because that what we could afford. I guess at least we did have some standards because even though we bought cheap beer, we usually bought it in bottles.

This is a Ringle quick release lever made into a bottle opener. I bought it at the bike shop I worked at in 1992. It has never ever left my key ring since then. It has seen action.

This guys has one too

Anyone remember the Coors cans that had three buttons to push to open the can, and shred your fingertips. They were not on the market for long.

Back in the mid 1970s Coors was not available in Alabama. On my trips to see my grandparents I would load up 4 cases of Coors in the front trunk of my 914, and four in the rear trunk. As a bachelor, I traveled light on luggage. I could sell the Coors in Alabama and pay for my gasoline cost, and still have a profit.

I moved to Oklahoma in 1978, so that was the end on my bootlegging.

That's really cool. Patina, baby.

I see you still use a "Club", too. I know that, because I do too.

This is not my opener or my hand but is representative so you understand the size.
As a bartender, it was in my back pocket and was tall enough that your finger could snag the big hole in the top to whip it out, pop the cap, catch the cap to throw in the trash, and then spin the opener back into your pocket in the blink of an eye.
I have a couple of those kicking around from when I owned a bar/restaurant. Sam Adams branded. They rock.
I also like the waiter's corkscrews as they double as beer openers, the flip down arm that you use for leverage against the bottle is also a beer cap remover.

Hah good eye. I have the club and the key - from late 90s. At some point a long time ago the paranoid voice in my head took over and asked me….what happens if this lock fails? And haven’t used it since.

I opened a bottle recently with a butter knife.

At home, I have three church keys and the one on the cheap corkscrew.

So here’s a new school example of a Church Key…

Designed using finite element optimization and 3D printed in metal.

Lightweight, compact, and high tech.

A friend manages a metal 3D printing shop and they hand these out to potential customers. It’s a great little conversation starter. The shop is Next Level https://www.nextlevelam.com/

I did it to make enough cash to pay for the cost of the trip to see my relatives.
