The simple bangora. Vented, classic, this one for all the money.

^^^^ I wear a Stetson similar to above. It's sweat soaked, hand shaped, bashed up and works perfect.
I wear it with swim shorts, T shirt and flip-flops, no poser here.

Define ‘cowboy’.
A “cowboy” herds cattle. A “rancher” breeds cattle, pulls calves, races Miata’s….

It’s a good looking hat, but if goal is protection from the sun those rolled up sides are defeating the purpose.

BTW I read that skin cancer, especially on the ears, increased dramatically among farmers in the 70s. Farmers switched from pit helmets and wide brim hats to Seed Corn, John Deere, trucker’s or baseball caps - whatever you want to call them - in the late 50s, early 60s.

I always liked a fedora or a cowboy hat, but I can’t pull it off.

The "airflo" models have mesh around the top edge to help keep you cool

Tilley Airflo's are just awesome for everything. They also have an integral neck band for windy days or sailing, but it tucks away as if its not there if you don't need it. Its my go to for outdoor summer work, unless I need the gnat screen.

I have a Resistol cowboy hat that I really like as well, but its too easy to damage or get dirty for actual work use. Its fine for hanging out or doing groundwork with the horse, but not for mowing etc.

There is not a hat made I can wear that I don't made look dorky.

The power of dork.

However, after many years in the sun, my skin guy gave me the same ultimatum: Wear a hat around the farm.

I bought two hats from Henschel Hat Company over five years ago and they have been excellent in protection and durability. They are also vented, which helps in my area. I also have a huge melon and their XXX fits.

One option is a cowboy hat… lots of citiots wear these tho. I don’t want to look like a dime store cowboy.

What do you guys wear?
I have a large wide brimmed hat with neck protection. I 100% don't care what anyone thinks it looks like, skin cancer is no joke. My dermatologist burns off spots on my head and arms every 6 months. Part of that is from growing up in Hawaii, and not wearing a hat, shirt or shoes. I was so tanned I was the same color as the Hawaiians. Now I lather up in sun screen. My brother has had several surgeries for skin cancers.

Yup, I've been in that club for a while. Skin cancer is the result of cumulative sun burning and exposure. I am happy when the 6 month derm visit is only quick freezes and no biopsies.

I wear hats outside 95% of the time. If its overcast, I cheat. Large straw hat when doing yardwork.

Problem time is when I am track marshalling and using the radio. Headphones and straw hats don't play well.

I was thinking about this for track days especially, and man it's hard to find something that's not completely at odds with UV resistant, breathable clothing. There's just no looking good--at least not so much that I won't feel ridiculous and get laughs from my wife.

I'm not a hat fan and rarely wear one but I do like my Tilley hat since I can roll it up and tuck it away when not needed. For pure performance it's hard to beat a straw cowboy hat.

Regardless of hat, I always wear a bandana wrapped around my bare skull under the hat. Another one goes around my neck. You would be surprised by the cooling factor. Sometimes a 3rd for face & nose dust when off-roading.

Any rural bar newbie in AZ has heard the John Deere Cap or Cowboy Hat law for their small town as told to them by some old timer. Of course its a joke, but sometimes its best to pretend its not.

Not wearing either is unknown territory.

Yep, that's why I like the Tilleys, you figure out your hat size and then you know it'll fit every time. My head's pretty big. I've had buddies try to loan me a baseball hat that fit like one of the hats from "Men on Film" from In Living Color until I loosened them as far as they would go. I wear a 7 ¾ so not the biggest head, but pretty big. I think someone here once mentioned being a 7 ⅞.
