I hear you. "Find something you love to do and you'll never work a day in your life".

I found that true over the course of my 35 year career in aerospace. I am truly enamored with big jet airplanes. Having been privileged to have been flown around the world on my employer's dime to help fix, while crawling all over, inside and out, of these magnificent machines was just an amazing treat for a hopeless "gearhead" like me.

Alas, I did retire some eight years ago at the ripe old age of 56. My only real "work" today is yard work and wrenching on my fleet of old cars and bikes. Oh, and I've been building a few muzzle loaders for fun and profit, after the proprietor of the shop from whom I purchased the parts to build the one I documented here got a look at it. Other than that, definitively "unemployed". It's great.

Those are Bromeliads, for anyone interested. Very easy to grow and maintain. They readily multiple too and can be divided and sold off.

The retail stores like Home Depot are getting $20 each for them. And they don't always have a decent selection of them.

I'm also growing palms from seed. This is a fruit stalk from a Archontophoenix 'Tuckeri' I have on my property. Those fruit will eventually turn red/black and then can be harvested, germinated, and grown into seedlings and later saleable young palm trees. It's native to Australia, has no armament, decent cold hardiness, and is self shedding (doesn't need pruning as it grows). Has a gorgeous crown shaft. Best of all - very hard to find - even throughout the state.

I won't exactly get rich off these but will be a nice cash supplement to my current income.

30 yrs. SoCal facilities & IT @ Boeing. Bought from Rockwell in 1996.
In 1998 I was sent to Toyota & Fujitsu Japan to learn how to facilitate LEAN & CMMI into large orgs.

The CMMS tools I had expertise in were IBM Maximo & Infor HxGN EAM.
Site EAM system implementations was my bread & butter till just last year.
Minimum 90 day term, Hourly rate & travel expenses was the deal.

Everyday now is a Saturday, its all good.

Guess I could also mention my motorcycle hobby. So far I haven't done any selling but at some point (hopefully starting next year) I will begin to offer some parts and maybe a few bikes as well.

My collection is centric to the 2nd Generation Honda Interceptor, which were only produced from '86 to '87.

Getting parts for these bikes is getting harder and harder, but I have managed to "stockpile" a fair amount including brake parts, lights, mirrors, tanks, tool kits, electronics, seats, cooling system parts, fairings and cowls.

And carburetors....complete sets all rebuilt by me!

I havent had a job since 2018. At the age of 72 I like to spend my time doing what I want. I sort of do anything for a buck just for entertainment. I aquire cheap/free old vehicles and Snapper Comets that I fix up and sell. I like taking something that is broken and making it work. I currently have a Yamaha Virago that I am waiting on a title so I can sell. It was a challenge for sure. Made $60 selling an Apple 2C for a guy last week. Who knows whats next ?

"Gainfully employed" is over-rated imo ...

I was employed ... then I became a bum ... exited the corporate IT world at 48... 17 years ago ... no regerts..

I'm so used to being poor that I don't spend large amounts on myself. But now that houses are paid off and rents are rolling in, plus I get the old age pension, I'm getting more money that even I can't drink my way through. So life is easy.

I never really worked that hard. But I bought investments with the money I had. So that has finally paid off I guess.

I'm self-unemployed. I owned 90% of the stock in the C corp that employed me, so when I was ready to retire, I fired myself.

Just left a job: Six months of doing the job of multiple people and being told, "We are interviewing more people." Losing sleep and general dread about my job, I decided it was time to move on. The day I quit, I was informed that they had hired six people to take some of my workload off.

I'm going to take my time to find my next place of work.

Self-employed.

I was thinking recently about how long I want to work. I love what I do, think it is the most fascinating game in the world. It doesn’t interfere much with me doing what I want to do, if I want to go skiing on Wed or be in France for June I can. Not much “people” irritation, I avoid clients who seem potentially irritating. There’s not really a way to do half as much; you either play the game or you don’t. So I think I’d like to work for another decade, at least.

Very employed at a large financial institution as a Product Manager. I’ll be 56 soon, no intention of retiring anytime soon. I work in identity and access management. Tough, thankless business, but I love the incredible complexity of it. I’ll stay another 10 years if they will let me.

I'm 33 years into my carreer. For the past 20, there has been very little leadership not as a disguise for self-dealing. As a result, work has become a chronic exercise in crisis management at every organizational level. Things seem to have hit a breaking point recently but have seen cracks develop before only to be plastered over. I always thought I'd work to full retirement age but after seeing very, very few people do it well, am having serious doubts now.
