Are tariffs directly impacting anyones international orders?

As a customer, I had a similar situation recently. I bought seat reupholstery covers. The vendor/brand is USA, but foreign manufacture. When they arrived, the box had been cut open by US Customs and resealed by DHL. However, the damage was significant.

As a customer, I called the vendor who reordered a replacement. But, I got the feeling they were trying to redirect responsibility to me (they didn't, but that's how it felt).

This is absolutely 100% damage caused by US Customs. But, do they have any accountability? Is there a way to make a claim against them? Who ultimately has to pay for damaged parcels?

And, it seems these situations are getting worse. Is there a change in current Customs attitude/behavior? Just curious.

I'll add that the valuation of some parts seem arbitrary. I ordered a set of wheels and the import fee was almost as much as the wheels. I refused to pay the cost and DHL sent the wheels back.

Dave , be aware that anything you import into California is also subject to ca sales tax .
Not just from abroad but also out of state , but I’ve only been asked for ca sales tax on imports from Europe .
Not sure what the value threshold is , or even if there is one , but there is a ca tax department that I’d never heard of that look into your imports ….
This is on top of any federal duties owed on initial import .

I appreciate all who have replied you included pmax, this thread is about Porsche parts. Specifically the import tariffs on said parts, as I am looking to order 2 ac units approximately $14,000 USD, I wanted more info on what to expect and any other problems that may be associated with the new administrations rules and regulations at the moment. Also I may be liable for even more $$$, possible delays, damages etc. This is upsetting as I have bought an alternator from him last year and had absolutely no problem or incidents, pay the price listed on the website plus shipping fees and done. I was one of the first to order a complete AC system when he first started out and have gotten at least 3 people to order there ac systems in the past, same experience, order the parts online pay the price plus shipping receive the product, quickly I might add.

So back to the original questions I wanted to know what to expect now in ordering this, as I already knew what to expect prior to this administration.

There was a suggestion earlier that orders/demand seems to have shifted to Mexico, so one of two things is happening here…. either there is an uplift in air cooled 911 owners in Mexico or…. I’m sure you can fill in the gaps

Back in the late 2000`s i used to buy many parts from Pelican while living in France,almost nada tax.But the eu started to tax anything from outside the Eu with crazy prices.I could no longer buy anything from USA...little example i needed Viton o ring and complete valve cover gasket set from Wrightwood racing.The graphite type, before rosepassion had it for couple of years ( but past 3 years no longer)
So i got the it from Florida, ..Here in Czech now i had to fill up 3 paper forms prior them relising it to the post office i ended up pay double for the parts.They tax you on the shipping price too.
So i feel you pain but it is like this for a long while in Europe

When Wayne was troubleshooting his 914 with Carrera engine in it .I sent him one of my AFM units to test it.--It did not help. SO, Wayne sent it back to me to Czech but in this country only one person is handling all inport-lovely- He went on vacc.and some lady from his office sent me aviso about my AFM that i have to pay taxes double the price of my used unit...i said no way it was mine..so they sent it back to Wayne.. 1/2 year later, i have flown to FL where Wayne sent again my AFM to my budd`s address and now i had to take it throught the airpost customs...Luckylly the guy who saw my part knew about cars and let me have it no problem..

With the parts it is going to get worst then better...

Recently ordered some expensive parts related to porsche. Don't want to mention the brand or the source but they are round and approximately 17" x 2pi in circumference and built for me

MFG could not approximate how much tariffs I will have to pay when they arrive. We will see I guess fingers crossed.

I tried to order a new instrument cluster for my Ford. The good ones are made someplace in Europe. The vendor couldn’t guarantee an all-in price due to tariffs. I had a friend in Canada source one for me. He’ll bring it down the next time he comes home (lives here in the US).

That’s the thing, these tariffs were thrown in place, literally overnight. I don’t think there is a real system and there isn’t anyone to ask or referee.

I just paid $720 in tariffs today for a set of Braid wheels for a customer’s Cayenne. He has the money so it won’t be an issue but other than the UPS man asking for a check, there was no other documentation or explanation. It’s just pay the tariffs so we can give you your package.

Companies that sell auto parts from around the world are really going get ****ed on this deal. Both demand and supplies will dry up. The auto parts industry is one of the prime victims of this stupidity.

This sucks. Ordered a new vent window glass from Wallothnesch in Germany for a 2002 tii a week ago, just asked if it had shipped. Their response:

Dear Shaun,

Thank you for your order.

We are still in contact with UPS and the US Department of Commerce to provide trouble-free customs declaration and correct tariffs for all shipments to the United States.

As soon as we have all the data and the customs clearance has been completed correctly, hopefully we will be able to continue with the dispatch of parcels to the USA by the end of this month.

I have to order vent window glass for a '68 911 from France. Last time I did a few months ago before the de minimus exemption was removed it was 2 day from France for $50 or something like that. Can't wait to place the order later today, will post either way.
