These steps won't fly. Even with a handrail they are dangerous. I would NOT want to descend on them. |

![]() Those who said “steps” win! The “box” was just a wood box. I don’t know what its purpose was, other than to cover up the stairs. They are typical old house steep stairs for going down to a basement / side door. Tread 9.5” deep, a hair over 7.0” tall. I hope I’m not required to rebuild them. There’s no room at the bottom of the stairs for a larger run, the landing is small as it is and the inswing side door barely clears the bottom tread. I’ll install handrails on both side. These stairs won’t be used by customers. The basement is just storage. Maybe the city will let it slide.

Perspective is a Beyotch! In the top pic, the "landing" in front of the door looks like it's 14" - 16". In the bottom pic, the landing looks like it's 36".
Looking more closely, I think some of the other fellas are right, steps, yes, but weirdly steep and short, maybe not as much as a ladder, but certainly not up to code these days. I'd still probably want to open it up if it was someplace that I was going to live. But if this is the place that you've posted about before, maybe making into a cafe/restaurant or something, then probably best to leave the box. If you expose stairs, then someone will want to use the stairs.

I'll let others chime in about increasing the run to 11". (Hint, it's no bueno!)
Maybe you can re-install the box when inspectors are expected, then remove it for practicality. Green font. (-ish.)

I'm guessing that with the right sequence of interaction with bits of the house in the area, the box opens like a door to reveal a set of steps that go down into the sub-basement where the treasure, super computer, and armory is.

I came here for the palms and paddles magazines left under the stairs,
but my god... the distortion of this camera is amazing. If not for the broom in the pics, I wouldn't have thought they were pics of the same place. |

If necessary I will wall the door up and box over the stairs again. For now, it is just really convenient to get from one floor to the other without going outside and around and back inside.
This weekend I need to take out these partition walls that were installed in, I think, the between-wars years, when the house was converted to a triplex. ![]() The photo is confusing, but basically you’re looking into the foyer, except the foyer was split up into three parts to give each unit a separate entry after the front door.

Here, this makes it clearer. This is the house as-is. The purple walls are the partition walls.
![]() This is roughly what I’m thinking of doing. The green is the coffee counter. The lower flight of stairs gets moved to hug the wall. I don’t know why the original stairs came down smack in the middle of the foyer, but that is the original location. Maybe it was “showy”. This was a pretty nice house back in 1908. The green wall along the stairs probably won’t be a solid wall, but some sort of screen.

So I'm assuming there is another way into the first floor? Covering up those stairs makes no sense?

At some point, those stairs and their door were covered up because the first floor and basement were separate units. The model above shows the first floor only.
