I had a 1970 Mustang convertible for a while, automatic with a 302. I wanted to love it because it was my grandfathers car, but I just couldn’t do it. It drove like total garbage, and even if I invested thousands into modern suspension, brakes, EFI, etc it still wouldn’t drive any better than my Ram. Looks nice sitting there though! I gave it to my dad who appreciates that era of car.

^^ Totally with you on that. My dad was always a Ford guy and I wanted to love the late 60s Mustangs. Nope, they drove clunky. Big motors, straight line speed, vague steering, hippity-hop around corners. Aaak!

So much of the collector car market is nostalgia driven too, I would do terrible things for an NSX or 959 because they were my childhood poster cars. So if you look at the generation in their peak earning years, those are the cars that will generally be hot.

I look at BaT almost every day and often wonder where do all these guys get that kind of money to spend on that kind of car?
It's also interesting to me, seeing which cars sell for more than I'd expect. Are people buying them for purely nostalgic reasons or because they're really fun cars to drive? For a long time I thought it'd be cool to have a '57 T-bird, which is about the only Ford I like the style of, but then I got the chance to drive a restored '56. And you know what? It drove like the old Ford it was. Who wants that now days? I think the market is going to go up for cars like the NSX simply because they can be used as a 'normal' car if you want and they don't drive like an 'old' car.

I think 65-89 911s will forever be cherished and sought after cars. No other car in the history of cars checks so many boxes as does a 911.

Those things are like taxis around here, I have no idea why. On two occasions I've seen old, and I mean old, ladies getting out of them. I talked with one getting out of a metallic green car and she loved it. Great styling, nice GT cruiser. Modern day 928 so I get it. Wait two years and get one for $45K.

I paid top dollar for my `87 in 2003
![]() Now, it is worth more than double even with 75k more miles on it than when I bought it. The process: -boy that car is worth a lot...I should sell it -(after a drive) no way am I going to sell it because I enjoy it too much -what if the value tanks? -SO WHAT? I still enjoy the car and I don't need to sell it to pay bills. I drive it less than I used to but still have a big grin when when I do. There is no automatic trans nanny laden modern car that is as distinctive and as much fun as the one in my garage and, as others have said, the manual trans is rapidly becoming a major anti-theft feature to anyone other than a pro and they don't care about my old car.

I've driven a 996TT, fastest Camry on Earth. No thanks.
I think 997 would be a better choice, certainly looks a lot better than a 6, just my 2¢.

Some years back there was a pic on this forum of a gold colored 996. I swear it was almost indistinguishable from a Camry.
And the interiors from that era Porsche don't help matters.

"So... 996 Turbo?? She really gets after it!" I showed him 2 laps and talked through braking points, turn in, and track out emphasizing that he wants to get the wheel fully unwound B4 coming onto boost. He did great the rest of the day. Very fun car.

I’ve owned both, I’ll take the 996TT all day long over a 997 or 997S. I’d prefer a 997TT but they are way more money.

I was watching the latest 'Harry's Garage' where he is reviewing cars for an upcoming auction. He made comments on a beautiful Jag E Type coupe and I couldn't help thinking how old it looked and wondered about its future desirability. One of the commenters mentioned that E Type prices have been dropping which I don't find surprising (if true).
Will that happen to air cooled 911s? At the moment it doesn't seem so - time will tell. The 911 has a lineage, a connection, all the way up to today which the E Type does not have.
