Prepping for snowmaggedon today. Fill everything with gas, make sure the battery tender is hooked up on the tractor, find the snow shovel. Fill the pantry. The best thing about preparing is it scares the snow away.

We got to -21F last night and it’s supposed to be below zero most of the weekend. No snow forecasted.

Exactly right

Generator readied, started and refreshed, new battery for the Polaris, snow plow on the Polaris, boo-coo wood for the fireplaces, battery chargers arrayed, gas like you read about and now we wait

I just want to scare the ice away!

No snow here, but it is bitterly cold with high winds. Woke up to-8° with the windchill of -25.

The people of Wichita were nice enough to start driving at about 20 MPH around town yesterday in honor of the upcoming storm.

Our local favorite weatherman just said we might well break a record for the most snow over three days of snow. Ack, I typed that bad four letter word. I meant white crap that belongs on mountain tops, not here!

We have enough food on hand to provision us for a month. The Gas company says they are ready, and the power company says they are ready. We have one bit of luck in that a assisted living - nursing home is 4 blocks away. They are a priority power customer, so the power companies gets them back on line right after the police departments. We are on the same grid.

Our house is laid out so that all the water connections are on inside walls, so freezing pipes are not a worry. We never drip the water faucets. And we are due some below zero temps. 180 hours of below freezing is the forecast. We have no intentions of going anywhere for a while.

A friend who has lived in a Mediterranean climate all his life asked about how we in the north deal with the cold. I told him about one aspect I don't hear a lot about - it's the dry air, which to me is worse than the cold.
Something that people don't talk about much, but which is one of the biggest annoyances of cold weather is what it does to our skin. The cold air outside is cold and dry, with very low in humidity. When it comes inside and is warmed and becomes warm and very dry air. This is very different from the hot dry air of places like Arizona. When it's hot you sweat and it helps keep your skin moist. When the air is comfortably warm and very dry, you don't sweat. My skin dries out and itches and gets little bumps on it. The airways in my nose and throat get dry, and I cough and sneeze like I have a cold. To me, it's worse than the cold air.
It's miserable, and there is no way to get completely away from it. When you're cold you can come inside and get warm, but wherever you are, it's dry. You can humidify the inside air somewhat, but there is a limit. Widows get cold, and above about 35% humidity, moisture condenses and freezes on the glass. In a poorly insulated house it will even condense on the walls, so there is only so much mitigation you can do.
Bottom line - here in the Midwest, in the summer we complain about the heat and humidity, and in the winter we complain about the cold and the dryness. No wonder we're such a cranky bunch of bastages.

If my daughter’s dorm in Norman loses power I’m sending her to your place! Don’t worry, she assured me they have enough wine to survive for quite a few days.

Winter gets really nasty here today ... it's been 24 years since our last bad winter (ice/snow) storm ... and I "need" to go out one more time before it hits later today...

I foegot to toss my little beastly Stihl in the truck toolbox ... might grab a bigly saw too ...

This is gonna be a BAD ice storm

Be safe!

The forecasts have been getting increasingly worse as the week has progressed. 8-12" No, maybe 15"! Now, maybe 20", 24" is not out of the question!

SO, I get up this morning and there's maybe 1.25" so far. And it's not snowing. A quick look at the radar and the majority of the storm seems to be east of us. Unless something pops up on radar out of nowhere, which I don't see happening.

Yeah, we might get a little more but this is going to turn out like the biggest weather con-job in years.

We have maybe 2” thus far, and it’s snowing very lightly right now. Snowpacalypse!

Snow totals dropping in forecasts here and ice totals rising.
I have a full 500 gal propane tank and a generator. Its undersized for the house though, so I won't have ovens and some outlets etc.
Paul, do you have enough generator to keep bucket heaters and such going? I'm glad I only have 2 horses to deal with in these conditions, it can be harder than keeping the humans comfy.

Last night at 11pm it was 60º. This morning when I got up it was 38º and the temp is supposed to fall all day. We got 0.4" of rain overnight. It's supposed to rain tomorrow morning. I hope it snows instead. The weather is going to suck until Tue morning when it warms up.
