First of all, it’s Florida so all bets are off.
If the pilot thinks he’s about to crash but finds a highway nearby, he’s gonna try to land irregardless* of the traffic below. I would. *Used to not be a real word. But in Florida it still, and always will, count as a word, IIRC. |

Given that I am not a pilot, but having watched the Blancolerio video and a number of videos on emergency procedures, I think I would have avoided the highway and gone gear up into the undeveloped land just to the west of the highway corridor.
This opinion is worth every cent you paid for it.

FWIW I'm going to give the Camry driver high marks for not making the situation worse.

^^^How would that be? Interesting comment.
LOL, on the Blancolirio channel someone mentioned that if they were the Toyota driver the fate of the pilot would have changed significantly. That generated some comments, for sure. Might be edited out by now. |

Regardless of armchair quarterbacks, I feel the driver of the Camry was taken by surprise and did what most of us would do when a large unknown object crushes the roof of our car and bounces off to land on the highway in front of us because we slammed on the brakes. Stop the vehicle and scream WTF!

Except it was dark so that field was not seen. In the daylight, probably much different outcome but in initial pilot training, we are taught to find a road first as its usually the safest place. Fields have lots of hazards. Usually not an interstate, but a country road. but that area is densely populated so it's best to land with the flow of traffic as opposed to landing on a road with a bunch of stopped cars at a red light.

I can't imagine the fright the lady had, just driving along safely, and all of sudden a huge crash, bang WTF is that, then oh crap, there is an airplane falling off of my car.
Like 99.999% or all drivers, as soon as there is an unexpected loud and car destabilizing thing, hit the brakes. It is wonderful that no one was seriously hurt. She will get a really nice new car, and the airplane will get scrapped, and they can buy a replacement one. I hope the airplane owners have good insurance.

Plane crash in Mexico a few days ago.. He aimed for a field and came up short and clipped a building killing 10+ people. No matter which area you pick to land with a glider, it's basically hope for the best.

On a different note what kind of insurance do aircraft owners generally have ? I am wondering will that insurance pay for the replacement of the damaged car ? Very fortunate that no one was seriously hurt .

If they do pay, you can bet it won't be "fair"
. Last two totaled cars were 3K under valued (each)... no recourse really... and it sucks ... but that's the way it is... or was.
