Emmylou ...
Don't know why ... but I missed out over the years ...
Been listening to her and M. Knopfler... now I need more suggestions... Not really into bluegrass, newgrass, etc. but love Jerry Douglas live and that leads to ???. But I'm counting on at least six of y'all to make a few suggestions from Emmylou over the years ![]() Thanks! |

From Wrecking Ball (One of my favorite Emmylou Albums)
From Elite Hotel (There's also a version of this with Gram Parsons, some say it's better)

She got noticed on this album (Grievous Angel with Gram Parsons. It's a stone cold classic)

She covered this David Olney song so well that it almost made a believer out of me. She doesn't even sing until the very end. It's not for everyone, but it touches my heart.

Steve Earle wrote it, Emmylou has made it her own, in my opinion (on Wrecking Ball) but here's a duet. A sad song, for sure, but absolutely lovely

Here's another that could make me a believer if I wasn't such a hardened cynic

KFC, I'd start with the early stuff, Luxury Liner, Evangeline, Elite Hotel, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town (and Grievous Angel)
Then start looking for collaborations - she's done duets with so many people. This is with Willie

G'day!
|
I met my first girlfriend in college at a record store I would frequent in Gainesville, while attending The University of Florida from '72-'77.
She was the younger sister of the owner, Samantha (Sam). Shawn lived in Miami but would travel to Gainesville at least monthly to spend time with her older sister and hang out. I happened to be there one day flipping through the albums and when we saw each other - there was an immediate chemistry. Sam was pretty cool, as most music store owners are, and I remember how much she ABSOLUTELY raved on Emmylou, when she started coming on board. This was 1973. Way early in her career, but Sam with her keen ear knew she was something special - something different. Shawn and I dated for about 2 more years before the long distance thing took it's toll. I stayed over night at her house the night before taking my flight to Puerto Rico on my first surf trip outside the continental US. She picked me up at the airport on the return flight. There are a lot of great memories. Unfortunately Shawn succumbed to cancer about 5 years ago. But the music of Emmylou somehow always brings me back to those special years.

And a little off the beaten path, but this song was written about Emmylou.
Sammy BoDean was telling T-Bone Burnett how he was infatuated with and loved Emmylou and T-Bone told him "Well... just think. She's looking for you somewhere..."

I like her, especially her collaborations.
Vicki loves this performance. As to Emmylou, she says, "That girl can't dance worth spit, but she sure can sing."

I like her version of this standard with a the writer unknown:
It made me think of the same song in the Nashville series. A pretty touching scene, with Rayna being unknown to the old man as the queen of country out on a hiatus.
