A nothing day

I didn't do a damn thing today. Well, I made a couple of social media posts and read a letter from a friend. But that's it.
I used to think I had to be productive or the day was wasted, but I find myself feeling totally unapologetic. The problem with doing nothing is that it's hard to tell when you've finished.
Oh well. Back to it!

I would be happy to have days like that. The wife is not so happy for me to have days like that.

Congrats on a great day!

I can't speak for others here but I sometimes go through periods when I don't want to do anything more than absolutely necessary.

I've used "Mental Health Day" in the past to explain/justify it.

But I really think there's something to it. Especially if you're the bread winner and overall are responsible for your domain.

Sometimes we need a break!

Part two:

This concept is important to understand as it relates to retirement. Throw in whether you are single or not, as well. Also key factors involved in how things play out.

I am now down to only two properties I maintain the landscaping for. That's not a lot of responsibility so very near to being 100% "free". It's enough however, coupled with being single, that allows much freedom on how I spend my time. I like doing this kind of work so it's OK.

Part three:

While I have always enjoyed my activities - I have to say having more scheduling flexibility to also take naps, sleep in, go to bed late (or early) is an incredible luxury. I've earned it and am embracing it, too!

Epilogue:

How did it get so late so soon?
It's night before it's afternoon.
December is here before it's June.
My goodness how time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon? ~Dr. Seuss

I have lists and really need to cross off a few items every day.
Sometimes it's simply updating a list, or cleaning up a bench, but always at least something.
My personal mantra is tomorrow should be better than today.
Not much, but something.

When you guys do "nothing" what do you do?
TV? Stare at a wall? Sleep?
My nothing is usually planning something.

"Do Nothing Day" at my house is also known as "anxiety guilt and shame, you entitled slacker" day. It's a personal problem

I can't do nothing. I'll read before I do nothing. Only if I'm real sick will I stay practically motionless and I'll take an Ambien or something just to make time disappear. Otherwise I'm doing something even if reading and posting here and elsewhere. There's always the pic thread as well as the who died thread. News in general seems to appear here many times before I read it in the morning online paper.

What is nothing though? Does one have to be productive? I'm doing things now that are solely for me. Purely vanity stuff like organizing toolbox drawers. Some call it busy work. I'm not happy unless I'm busy so busy work it is.

However, do understand that where Patrick lives the temps are in the teens. If I faced that being an outside person I don't know what I'd do.

Well, I do in fact — move.

There's flies in the kitchen
I can hear them there buzzing
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today
How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
Come home in the evening and have nothing to say?

Doing nothing is definitely underrated...it's good to clear the mind for a bit and not focus on things. I always think I have "nothing" days, but in reality I sit and read a lot on those days. I'm not sure how long I could do absolutely nothing without just falling asleep...

The weird part of retirement and doing nothing all day is easy, but when something comes up, like a Dr. apt or going to the store, doing one thing is easy, but to do TWO or more things in one day is difficult.

I had an appointment with my eye doc as a followup to my cataract surgery, and then I had an apt with my cardiologist. Then I stopped at the store for some provisions for the upcoming snowmageddon with winter weather about to hit us with maybe 12 inches of that white crap falling from the sky that belongs up in the mountains and not here!

Three things in one morning! Phew.

I have no problem being idle, as long as I have a book. TV has not been a part of our lives for many decades. However when I get a project going, it is a driving force. I will plan, revise, sketch parts, joints and layouts to make things go more easily.
Many days though, my greatest energy is put into some music. Gotta learn new (or old) songs.

If I didn't have nothing to do I'd be bored out of my mind.

Ask my wife, I'm the best at doing nothing. I can nail it every time.

The days I do have something to do, I try to knock it out by noon or so as I'm not much good after lunch.

Speaking of lunch, I need to go make a sandwich.

There, see. I've gone and done something today. Getting out of practice I guess.
