Yeah, thats what this co-worker of mine said. . .but about piercings. So, I pinned him down (no-pun) on "why?"

It came down to; "because it means she's up to doing anything."
I think what he really meant to say was ". . .she's up to doing anyone." . .but I let it go.

Wow, "doing anyone" that is sexy.

Now what if you start dating, or even marry the pierced girl, are you going to be comfortable walking down the street knowing that 99% of people think:

1. She'll do anything
2. She'll do anyone
3. Plus all the sexual associations of the tongue piercing

This weekend I had a barbeque and one of my guests had a fresh tattoo on her wrist where her watchstrap should go - her boyfriend's mobile phone number! Having talked to her she didn't seem so dumb that she couldn't use the memory function on her mobile, so why?. What does she do with it when he changes number or she changes boyfriend? Whats the stupidest one you've seen?
I spoke with that dumb bunny at your barbeque, (barbeque? it was catered and there were over 70 people!). We are not going to be seeing her in the finals of a quiz show any time soon, IQ and shoe size in competition or what! At first I thought it was her bloodgroup, but she explained that it was a fashion amongst her friends to put a new boyfriend's cell phone number on your arm, it was a semi-permanent like permanent make-up and SHOULD fade away completely in one to three years.

Proper traditional full suit irizumi is done over a period of years.

The tattoos that made me laugh most were on a girl in a skimpy costume about 20 years ago in Negril. She had a Lacoste crocodile on her left boob, a levis red label tag on her right buttock and Gucci "G"s on her feet. Small, discreet and made some sort of statement about fashion I suppose.

Thats what i meant milu. You sit for weeks at a time over years and have it done with a piece of bamboo. I've seen it done at tattoo conventions and it is quite amazing to watch it being done.

In general, tattoos are are lazy way to distinguish yourself.

They are all the rage in a society that values self expression through decoration rather than achievement.

There are a million ways to get meaningful recognition, but they all require effort. You can excel at your profession, be a trusted and reliable friend, an accomplished musician, any number of ways to establish an identity. Tattoos are frequently the lazy mans substitute; "Look at me, I'm a badass. Look at me, I'm a gearhead. Look at me, I'm an artist"

You think Einstein had E=mc2 tattooed on his ass? I doubt it.

No, but Feynman might have!

Isabo 07-14-2003 11:45 AM

Whoops! I seem to have opened up a hornet's nest!
Let me clarify my own views.
Some people look good with tattoos and some don't.
Some tattoos are art, some are scrawls and doodles and some are just silly.
I wish my daughter had less of them (and piercings) and those more discreet.

Sarah 07-14-2003 12:04 PM

Wow. I did not know some people in our porsche crowd had such negative opinions about tattoos. Oops...looks like I just came out of the "woodwork." ;) ;)

Don't forget the part numbers! Could be useful when the PP parts computer crashes;)

Wow, so much negativity on tats in this form.

This one is classic, and completly wrong, and just an opinion.

Ya, forgot to mention that as of right now, I have 4, working on 3 more.

So I must be one who looks for meaningful recognition in my tats

Thats what I'm talking about. It's those "in your face/shock-factor" jobs I'm laughing about.

To quote Mark Wilson; "Just because nobody understands you, doesn't make you an artist."

Tattoos...I like this subject.

Jared - I think you should go for it. :)

911SC Pilot - What are they of?

DByers - I bet your friends "water world" theme is really cool & colorful.

Reading everybody's "two cents" on this topic is funny. People generally do have an "opinion and/or stereotype" about people who would choose to get a tattoo and then about what & where the tattoo is.

I have an angel on my right shoulder blade...it is not that big but I really like it. It is colorful, flowing, & the hubby likes it. I know a lot of people who have gotten them when they were younger and also when they were older (30s, 40s). Some of them love what they got...some of them wish they hadn't gotten it.

So from now on whenever it is visible i'll be thinking..."Look at me...my tan athletic shoulders & back are so sexy." hehehehe...well...cause they are......;);)

Hey....I have an impressive resume of professional achievements & was Phi Beta Kappa at the U of MN too. :):) hehehehe Have I burst anyone's tattoo stereotype bubbles yet? :D

(but I am dyslexic...so I still get to keep my "spell a few words wrong" free card) ;)

Time to clear thing up.

Notice I used the word frequently in describing my dislike of tattoos. In an earlier post I referred to an old girlfriend with a Pooh bear tattoo I loved.

Recent tattoos I've seen in California include Aryan nation tats with swastikas. Depictions of coital positions previously unfamiliar to my 12 year old son. (He pointed it out). I have seen an entire shaven head decorated with a spiders web including a fat black widow residing on the wearers temple. I've seen messages like "Eat me" and "F*** it" And I saw a beautiful young lady with the now classic "slippery when wet" emblazoned across her lower abdomen.

Sarah, I'm sure I would love your butterfly. :)

Not all tattoos are spur of the moment or done without thought for the future. I have one on my right inner forearm that was done by an tribe artist in Malaysia. I went through the British Army tracking school there and everyone who completed the course was adopted into the tribe that lived on this island where the school was located. The tattoo is part of the acceptance into the tribe. Every time I look at it I am reminded about that part of my past. By the way tattoos on your inner forearm are quite painful. Here is a not so good pic of it:

Agree w/ Isabo, (my favorite poster BTW), ;) , they look better on some people than others. I fully believe in people's right to self-expression as well, my biggest reason for not having tatoos is an aversion to following trends. This aversion is stronger in me than the average person, I think, it will even keep me from getting or doing something that I like, if everyone else is doing/getting it. If I got a tatoo, (or a "Von Dutch" hat/t-shirt), , I would feel as though I was wearing a clown suit around town. But obviously others don't feel the same.

Actually, a reasonable tatoo on the arm would not make me feel that way, but "sleeves" or neck tatoos would not be me, so I would look like an ass-clown. I have several friends w/ massive tatoos, including neck, girlfriend's/wife's name somewhere, (absolute GUARAN-F**KING-TEE that relationship is gonna be short), :D , etc., etc....

They, (tatoos), tend to look better on darker-skinned people, w/ some exceptions. The problem is that young people today, (am I really saying this)?? , have very little imagination. Not only do almost all of them want to be like everyone else, (their age), they can't even imagine the near future when they will wish that they could scrub the ink off w/ a brillo pad. Invest in laser surgery, it's gonna be HUGE.

I don't think that everyone is going to want their tats removed, some are very attractive, (like Sarah's I'm sure), but most will, IMO.

911SC Pilot - What are they of?
First one is a Comedy & Tragedy, which represents some of the happy and sad times of my younger life.(upper left arm)

Second one is a Sea Dragon with the body coiled into an S, signifying the first letter in my Last name. Represents also my childhood growing up in Hawaii.( upper right arm)

3rd is a skull ankle band around my left ankle. Skulls are horror movie icons (first tat back when I was 18, will be covered with something new.

4th is a blue rose, with my wifes name under it. We dont plan on getting a divorce, it signifies my love for her, and if she ever dies, it will never be covered up.

Of which, all 4 are NOT seen. You would never know I have tats.(Well, maybe my "past the middle of my back long hair" might give it away) I never got them to impress people. They were for ME. If people saw them, and liked them great, If they didnt like them, didnt, and doesnt matter to me.

My next tat i will be geating is a Chinese Symbol, that represent Father, or Dad, which is going on the back of my neck. So even if I cut my hair( ya right), you still wont see it, since the shirt collar will cover it.

After that one. Im working on a piece that represents my 3 grandchildren that I have full custody of, and that I am raising.

Plus working on a another one.
