Just continuing the discussion.

Getting a tattoo is definitely not for everyone thus the reason some people do and some people don't get one. It does not bother me at all if people can't stand them because everyone has stuff they don't like.

There are some I have seen that are very intricate & with a lot of colors. I think it is kind of interesting to hear some of the stories people tell about them. Just another way to get to know people. It was a decision they made at a time in their life (just like non-tattoo decisions that people make in their life that makes a person who they are).

I did not get mine until I was 30...looked at many locations before deciding where to get it, and chose a place where it would be a one of kind design based on a sketch I drew first...not something picked off a wall ( ;) ).

You can't even see my angel unless I have a racer back shirt on or a summer tank. I do not advertise it to the masses. :)

My 17 year niece (very similar to what Isabo started this thread with) is getting into the piercing and thinking of a tattoo when she is 18. We had a long talk about it over July 4th and I asked her what the rush was. (There is a "youth" thing going-on).

I know she is going to do what she is going to do...but we talked about being very thoughtful about what she decides, would she be happy or regret doing it now, think "location location location" as far as visibility affecting future employment opportunities. So who knows...ultimately it is her decision & her bod.

But another thing....DO NOT DRINK & THEN GET A TATTOO. :)

A guy friend of mine was in the marines and got drunk with his buddies and they all got one. He said his was a ninja turtle...I said are you sure they understood what you wanted? That looks like Chubaka (sp?) from Star Wars to me. :D He had a good sense of humor about it.

Also a gal I used to know wanted a 4" panther on her back & also had a few beverages before getting hers...Uummmm it turned out to be about 9" long and she freaked. :)

So there's some more misc info on this subject.SmileWavy

A Michael Parkes tattoo image is definitely something I could look at.

Or a DeChirico, a Magritte, a Kandinsky.

Now, if people were to put fine art (and no, not Looney Tunes), on their backs and bums, the idea wouldn't be nearly as wretched.

Speaking of fine art, I have M.C. Escher's "hand in reflecting Sphere tattooed on my right arm. I've always loved Escher's stuff and this piece has a very personal meaning to me.

Upload a photo. Sounds cool...

By the way, Escher fact: he was ostracized for being more a technical illustrator than "artist." The World couldn't accept a free thinker such as he.

Jared at Pelican Parts 07-15-2003 11:02 AM

Escher was quite an individual.

It sounds as if getting the full body suit in Japan, even using traditional methods could be quite quick in your case.
You seem to have a lot of coverage already!
This afternoon I interrogated my daughter who started doing her thesis on tattoos before changing theme, what she said was that one of the distinguishing features of traditional Japanese tattoos is that the design was planned as a whole from the outset and that the blank spaces were as important as the tattooed. One of the problems I would have is all the different styles coming together in a pleasing whole.
Another concern as a woman is the changing fashions in tattooing, some are now looking very dated. A while back it was all pseudo japanese chap books, then black work, celtic, tribal etc. all of which make picking an evening dress very hard, (I have been through this very recently with my kid and the options are really cover up or plain black), Try making a heavilly tattooed female look elegant in formal clothes, a mother's nightmare! You do not want to get these details wrong in Milan!
I'm going away for a few days break to laze on a beach. I'm looking forward to seeing how this thread pans out when I get back.
Isa.

Do you have any pics of your daughter? I'd like to see her work.

Nearly impossible, IMHO.

I have to say that is cool. Though how do you keep something like that looking fresh?

Jared at Pelican Parts 07-15-2003 12:43 PM

Touch ups, lol. My dad did it, soif it ever starts to look bad, I'll have him touch it up. After 30 years as an architect, he decided to become a tattoo artist. talk about a career change!

That picture actually sucks, it's too dark, theres even more detail in it than you can see.

I'd eventually like to exapnd it into a full sleeve, continuing the Escher theme, maybe using something like "Metamorphose" patterns around it and down.

island911 07-15-2003 12:49 PM

Dude, wouldn't Escher have wanted you to have tatooed the ball right on your actual hand?

Yeah - reeaaaal sexy.

Oh my God, I can't stop laughing, that is the funniest thing I think I've ever read on the internet :D :D :D http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

The only cool tattoo I've ever seen was this guy on the beach who had a symmetrical design on the front of his right leg. I asked him about it and he said he drew it out on paper one day while extremely bored in class and put it on the front of his binder for a few years until a friend said it would make a cool tattoo.

I've thought about getting a tattoo, but I have better things to do than that right now and I don't really feel strongly about something to put it on my body.

Wasn't "Metamorphose" the staircase piece inside the castle?

How would that be possible? Speaking of hand tattoos, I like that one jesse james has on his palm that says, "Pay Up, Sucker!"

Actually no, Metamorphose is a giant piece he cut into wood! it's really impressive. The one you are thinking of is called Relativity i believe.

Here's a link..

The woodcut is one giant piece that goes from end to end. I'd like to incorporate this into a sleeve

I wouldn't get one as my tastes and habits change every few years, and I can just change the pictures on my walls and throw out the old furniture - not so with tattoos. Unless it was one of those henna tattoos that fade out in a couple of years.

dd74 07-15-2003 02:08 PM

I thought henna fades in a couple of days...

Sarah 07-15-2003 04:39 PM

Jared...woow that has a lot of detail to it. Your Dad is talented.

Hey Bill...next time you throw out your furniture...can I have your leather couches?? ;) ;) (just kidding)

Jared at Pelican Parts 07-15-2003 04:44 PM

Yup, he's quite skilled. And that's a BAD picture, you should see it up close... Kind of an odd transition going from the cover of Architectural Digest to doing tattoos, but hey, whatever makes you happy..

Same here... I though about doing it but then if I had got one back when I was in my twenties... how cool would I look NOW with a big Led Zeplin tatoo?

I don't mind tatoos as art (like Jared or the Japense stuff), problem being most of the "fad" tats are stupid crap and not art.
