Have We Talked About Car Covers?

My Pelican fu may be weak, couldn’t find any threads.

I need an outdoor cover for my 1996 Subaru Outback wagon.

The ‘zon has many and they start at $60. That seems cheap. This will be used in the desert heat in the metro Phx area.

What say the Peanut Gallery?

The note about California Car Cover is great.....BUT put that on the car then buy a cheapo one from Walmart as the sun eats them fast! Throw the cheap one away yearly and the good one will keep the car nice and clean and dry.

Did this for my 914-6 race car over a 10 year period and the paint held up very well.

Make sure the cover is securely tied down so that the wind doesn't pull it off.
Air it out as often as you can so you don't start a mold and mushroom farm on your paint or interior.

I have a Cal Car cover from the namesake company. There are a couple other cover companies that sound like California Car Cover but this is the one in Simi valley, CA. The cover I bought is called Superweave. It is rumored that Cal Car Cover does not make covers in house. In fact I'm dealing with them over a warrantee issue so well known to them they have a name for it — snowing. It leaves a sticky gray dust on your paint after a year. They have had to replace a lot of these but keep selling them. My cover is in semi shade between 2 buildings, not out in full sun with nothing around it.

The CS guy told me that the warrantee pics I sent have to be approved for replacement by "the manufacturer. They said they would replace it. That was February 2 and no cover. Email last week on Tuesday as to where my replace is in the system has not been replied to yet. They just ghosted me.

My last cover from a custom company back East lasted 6 years or more. They got out of the business and sell other products now. They did my Boxster cover too in bright red and it was pretty good. Faded a bit but the cover went with the car, it was that nice after a few years, all indoor.

One and done with CCC company. Since Pelican sells car covers, this thread is in poor taste, but I'm pointing out that maybe you should skip CCC and go with Pelican. Or ask somewhere else as polite person would have done in the first place.

Here's my post on the purchase from one of the above linked threads. Not a fan at all.

This, plus make it secure enough that wind doesn’t flap it against you car and abrade the paint.

I have a Coverking Satin Stretch indoor cover for my 997 that I bought from Pelican and really like it. As with all of them it is custom fit to the car. I actually have an extra one for the 996TT as well in my basement.

I do not know anything about the outdoor ones, so I cannot help other than to say the quality of the Coverking is good.

Can you build a carport instead?

Sorry champ but car covers are a compromise. A royal PITA.

I like the thick silver oxford cloth ones from the 'zon. They are nice and waterproof, the silver reflects the heat, and they have a decent cloth lining.

I'm not 100% sure if this is correct. But I have heard you should not put a (non-breathable) car cover on a wet car as it can cause clear coat problems.

I put a cheap outdoor cover on the 911 although it is indoors just to keep curious eyes off it. Id like a cheap indoor cover that breaths and will protect the cat from minor scratches too.

I got a 50 dollar gift Autozone gift card from a secret santa last Christmas. I used it to get a cheapo car cover for the TR. It is one of those Budge branded covers. Not sure it would hold up long in the weather but the car is inside so, it works.
I also have one of those 60 dollar silver covers on my Dodge truck. I like that cover as it is waterproof and has a cloth liner but being outside the cover lasts about 2 years at best. I need to replace it now as a matter of fact because the wind has done a number on it.

Also be careful to never install a cover on a dirty car, especially outside where the wind will move the cover relative to the car. At that point it becomes a fine sand paper.

Nice way to get that "patina" if that's the look you are going for.

It's their policy, pal. I just pointed it out. The mods haven't been exactly overbearing lately. And what do you see right about discussing competition on a vendor's site?

It is rude in case you don't know. The opposite of polite is rude.

Time for an update. I went with Pelican and got a CoverKing.

I'll be back in Arizona in late November, we'll see how it holds up after one Az summer.

Good choice. What's the inside liner? That's the one I should have bought. What model?

Something is goofy, but most likely a "carbon based interface" problem, meaning me.

When I click on the item from my order, it does not go to the catalog.

Any hoo, I placed my order by phone with our host. The cover was dropped shipped from CoverKing. Here's their description...

Custom Fit Car Cover Silverguard™
Silverguard Car Cover, crafted from UV-reflective fabric to shield your vehicle from sun damage and light rain, offering reliable outdoor protection, especially in sunny conditions.

It was $230 delivered.
