ISP shenannigans question

Our ISP was recently bought by Verizon. Frontier is now branded as 'A Verizon Company'.
All of a sudden my router quit working with my Roku device which is a wireless connection. It says it would connect but couldn't get to the internet. I at first thought it might be the Roku device so I went and got a new one yesterday. Same problem.
I got into the router to check it out via the SSID, and the window that came up said all the wireless 'stuff' had been Disabled (labeled in red letters).
A knowledgeable source has told me the take over probably was the cause of the disabling.
Why?
Just so they can get people to up their package?

Have you tried calling Verontier?

Sounds like BS to me. THere should be a notification if they are going to kill or change service to the point that your stuff doesn't work.

Same ISP here and no problems but I don't use my Roku. I know it's out of date. But that didn't seem to be your issue. I have generally found that if you can wait for an appt their techs are pretty good. Save me at least 3 times but one time kinda messed things up. Long story but I used an independent to solve that. He found a direct line to remote tech and all he did was identify himself as a tech and they seemed to bend over to cooperate.

Something to try? Sorry, I don't know where that number is now. But he didn't bring it with him.

You don't know these companies.

Can you just re-enable via the interface? If not, you can either plug a access point into an available jack or you can see about replacing the router.

I just got fiber finally and the provided router is weird, I can see ip settings, etc. but I can't change my local subnet or much of anything besides wireless contact info. Apparently I'm supposed to be able to do it via my providers website which I really don't like the thought of so I'll be replacing it with something else soonest. Fortunately our head network engineer guy lives about a mile from me and is on the same service, so he's already figured out what equipment is compatible. Knowing me I'm just gonna go grab an old machine from the garage and a Linux disk.. or maybe I'll play with BSD some.

I have Starlink. I'm in Ohio, and my ISP is variously shown as located In Chicago or San Francisco. When I was with Frontier it could be Cleveland or Wheeling, West Virginia.
I don't understand this stuff.

Down to geographic IP mapping which isn't exactly accurate. Depends on network providers having a sensible layout (ha!) as well as sharing data about their network (again, ha!). Most of it is built from people self reporting, reverse DNS, etc.

Well after some work I was able to enable the wi-fi on the router. That managed to kill my wi-fi enhancer that my computer relies on so I had to figure out how to reconfigure that too. Nothing like solving one problem only to cause another one.
Now everything is almost back to normal except getting my YouTubeTV account to show up correctly when I login via the new Roku device.
In the mean time I got to watch the race today on my wife's TV instead of my big one. I can't seem to win at this game.

Had similar trouble with xfinity a while back. They kept opening an xfinity hotspot at my home to broadcast for xfinity customers. It was their equipment.

Only choice at that location, so I bought an xfinity compatible modem, used my own router and gave their crap back.

Small matter of success this morning, I finally got everything working as it was. Some user error on my part, some I still blame on Verizon. They are sending me a new router but I don't think I'll be using it.

New router arrived just now.
My wife is asking if I'm planning on using it.
I don't think I am as things are working normally again now.

Where is a good site to check connection speeds?
That is the only thing that's slightly different.

I use fast.com. There's a bunch out there, quick search will lead you to a few.

Our ISP said we could have one of their routers, but suggested I buy my own with our setup here. They also know how I make my living and were more comfortable if I had my own instead of the janky consumer setup they have that works for 90% of their customers.

Sounds like they want you to pay for a “feature” you already had.

I would tend to agree with you on that.
When I called and asked what was up, first thing they did was offer to fix it if I upped my package to the 1 gig package. We. supposedly, have 500/500 right now. They also offered to give me a discount of some amount, I forget what it was, if I signed up for auto pay. That'll never happen as they'll probably add things in without our noticing if we don't look at the bill each month.

My only problem now is this, I don't see the 5G wireless name I used to see when hooking up the TV to the system. I only see the base name with no 2.4 or 5G tag on the end of it.
Not sure if we're getting our money's worth out of what we're paying for or not.

It sounds like a European company that sold home monitoring systems at a fixed one time cost. They went bankrupt and the new owners changed to model to a subscription on which (unless you paid) would brick your home monitoring/automation system.

Futurehome I think was the name...

@Scott Douglas, I don't ever see any upcharges and it saves 10 bucks/mo to autopay.

Last I knew. Now I have to check.
