Are we still using paste wax ?

Hey guys/gals : it seems like many folks are using whatever brand of spray wax/detailer/ceramic stuff out there . So many brands your head explodes doing research .

So does anyone still use good ole paste wax anymore ? Still with carnuba ? My Boxster is in need of a full on exterior cleaning/claybar/polishing/top coat .

The only spray product I have used is detailer from Mothers . Results with that product is so so . Maybe I am stuck in the past with paste wax . I am not 100 % sure I have the skill set to apply ceramic .

I use spray on, haven’t used paste wax in years, basically because I’m too lazy. I would guess paste is superior (?) but my cars are garage kept, rarely see rain and I’ve been happy with the results from the spray. I can’t recall which brand I’m using at the moment, I try different products….

I use a sealant on my daily driver but for the Porsche I've been using Mequiar's No 26 yellow paste wax for years. I have a friend who owns a Ferrari 355 and he uses the same No 26 wax.

I have had both my cars and my wife's car ceramic coated. That makes finish better than any wax I used. Bugs and dirt come off easily. I do use a spray on "car wash" for sport cleanups, or just the occasional bug hit or bird droppings.

The shine is amazing with the ceramic coating.

Just a straight iPhone photo. No enhancement.

I only use Carnuba wax on my cars. The car looks better, smells better and real Carnuba seems to last longer. The gimmicky synthetic miracle wax sellers are full of it. I do always have a can of cheap paste wax on hand I use on my saw tables. If it doesn't smell like sweet bananas I don't use it on the cars

I have two half used cans of Johnson's paste wax I am hoarding. I use it on my tablesaw, planes, and similar. Not in production now. Great stuff for these sorts of jobs.

Car wax? I can't even comment. I sort of wash and forget.

I am serious. With beeswax and turps. The ratio changes per job. A final paste wax finish built up of thin coats is special. The only thing more fun for me is French polish.

Ask Patrick (wdfifteen) about that.

There's no need for paste wax on paint anymore. MG, the products they have out now are amazing and Glen is correct on the ceramic. Done well it's a ton of work but incredible. After that it's all downhill taking care of your car's paint. Mist some rejuvenator on it now and then and you can count your eyelashes in the reflection.

I stopped waxing my cars about 5 years ago and switched to ceramic coatings.

Ceramic coatings (not ceramic wax or spay) take much more effort to apply, but then last for years with no maintenance other than washing the car.

Here is my car three years after a ceramic coat. The only thing I've done to the car since the ceramic coat is to wash it.

Ceramic is one i haven't tried. Actually lasts for years and water still beads? Applied with a buffer?

Do you find one brand better than another ? Apply by hand or machine ?

I apply by hand, it's satisfying for me (I'm weird, I know). I use Mother's but pretty sure any carnuba that has that wonderful smell is good. And you can build up layers of the stuff, supposedly you can't do that with synthetic wax. Carnuba wax is derived from palm trees from what i understand

I use paste wax on the steel table, fence and out feed table. Anywhere wood will be sliding. I squigle an S on the bottom of my hand planes with a candle before every use

Not really, applied to a small area (really, don't not listen to the directions) and worked in and buffed out. Each 2 sq ft section takes several minutes.

Yes, the cast iron on shop tools gets paste wax. Steel gets Crown Rust Prevention. Or Boeing T-9.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing or paste wax on table saw tops or any cast iron tops. I just gave my shaper a coat of paste wax and it glides very well.

Normally I use ceramic spray, but once a year I break out the orbital polisher. I use Griot’s Garage correcting cream and ceramic liquid wax. The results are pretty good but I’m exhausted.

Thanks
As I get older it gets harder to do. Thankfully the spray on wax is a game changer. I can do the whole vehicle in 15 minutes
