Internet Provider Question

Gave up on the boring company to fix the damage in my yard.
Eight bags of topsoil, six of sand, grass seed, straw, and a mornings work and I'm done.
Watered it in good...temps are going to be high the next week, should sprout fast.
All the bags carried in the trunk of the Prelude....two trips!

All the lighter spots are straw covering the seed.

I just cut Xfinity/Comcast loose 2 days ago. They are horrid. Frequent outages, constant rate increases, service appointments that take at least 4 days, forget about walking into their store - there's always 15 people in line, etc. All this abuse for $120/month for low-speed(it started out at $35 6 years ago). As they were doing the standard begging routine when I cancelled they ultimately got it down to $65 including my cellphone and would have a crew at my house within 3 hours to fix the latest outage Too little, too late a-holes.

Switched to Verizon Home Internet after several recommendations from neighbors. It never goes down. No buffering. We have a 5G tower 1/2 mile away. $75 for 300MPS high-speed, Ultra-HD 4K streaming, WiFi extender included. Price locked thru 2031, but I can cancel anytime. I think I get another $15 off if I switch my cellphone. + they gave me a $200 Amazon card, $150 Verizon credit and a $400 Samsung credit.

^^^ I haven't experienced outages with Xfinity....but the rates are terrible. Just had mine lowered $50/month from $300/month. I'm on their triple play...internet, tv, and phone.

The local Xfinity store is brand new, so it's not bad. The one it replaced was like visiting someone in jail. All the 'tellers' were behind inch glass and there were 'pass-thru doors' for getting or returning equipment. I had to yell almost for the gal to hear me.

Received a brochure today about pricing for the fiber optic internet service that they just buried.
Not sure which one I would pick...prices seem normal? Or are they high?

300 Mbps up & down...$55/month
500 Mbps ......$70/month
1 Gig Mbps.....$85/month

Router (if needed) $5/month or $120 to own it.

Two important questions:
What are the additional fees and taxes?
How long is that price locked in for? (They won't tell you but it could be a teaser rate and then they start jacking up the price) Unless it is locked in...

I looked it over again and they don't state anything about fees and taxes...but they surely will be there.
They included a second page with an area to sketch in the property with the water, electric, gas, septic. Also they state...."NCATS is not responsible for any yard or property damage incurred as a result of this project."

That ends my decision....I don't want my yard torn up again. The area along the road is finally getting back to how it was after I spent a few weeks fixing and watering.

300mbps is sufficient for the average Joe , even better if you really get that speed . We have Kinetic fiber optic and pay for 300mbps . I do speed checks several times a week . We rarely see 300 , more like 250 - 280 but sometimes as low as 150 .

Even at 150 we never see any issues or buffering on our TV's . Phones work as does my tablet . But I am paying for 300 so I expect it to be close to that . Sadly Kinetic is the only provider on our street and Verizon and T Mobile signals are weak . So for now Kinetic it is

I'm not sure of the speed of my Xfinity internet....I might start checking to see and compare.
I know that I never have drop-outs when streaming movies and the turtle cam is streaming sound and video 24/7

But the Xfinity bill is ridiculous for what I use.

I googled DSL...."Speeds generally range from 1 Mbps up to 100 Mbps depending on your provider and location."


Then I checked mine with Ookla speedtest. I'm paying for the fastest from Xfinity....
53MBps down and 31MBps up.....so I think I'm getting screwed.
But it's working.

Starlink. We have friends that live in Desboro. Internet was horrible. Rural property, once they got Starlink the service is excellent

We had DSL before going fiber . We are a ways away from the switching station . Speed was barely acceptable. Lots of buffering on TV and when perusing websites painfully slow .

I've installed Dish and Directv dishes with no problem.
Is StarLink basically the same regarding the dish location and the view of the sky? Are the satellites in the same general orbit as Dish & Direct?
Are trees an obstacle?

If fiber is available in your area ... that's the ticket imo. And the small "ditch wench" that buried it could bury from like 2" down to 1' deep.... I had mine placed very shallow after about a starting run... nothing to repair ... lawn wise.

Until I cut it a few weeks later

That was an easy-peasy fiber splice too.... no charge!

I would rather not have the underground cable...it would be 150 ft. min. The closest junction box that they installed is 10 ft beyond my property line.

I'm just looking and wondering if StarLink should be an option for me.
