First world problem.

I know some people that send their kids to these camps. 5 figures per kid is normalized - seems like a racket to me, but my kids aren’t getting stuck on a bus to the Poconos. |

Aren’t these for parents who don’t want their kids around for the summer?

Sadly only my oldest had any interest in going to any, and only to the same camp that had is run by the local school board. And one of my friends from my time there was the director when she went.

My hunting camp is northeast of Scranton. Lots of these summer camps up there. somewhat odd to me - both jewish and muslim camps in close proximity.
Several years ago the one closest to us was sold to an orthodox group. The most obvious change is that the guards are now very obviously armed with AR-15's. They do wave as we drive past on the dirt road. This isn't generally a high crime area, at least aside from the occasional poacher.

Summer camp? Hell.....
I had to walk uphill both ways to the pool. But seriously, I spent my summers working, mowing when I was younger and a lifeguard later. So yeah, all day looking at girls from 16 on was not a bad gig. My kids went to one run by their daycare for a while, but once they got older they stayed home. We did not have the means to send them to Camp Timberline, or any of the fancy ones around her3. |

our kids go to several day camps throughout the summer. It costs us at least a few k per summer and they are still home most of the summer. Vollyball camp, boyscout camp, robotics, science, music, art, etc. THey are all like 500 per week.
Its hard to know what to do with kids in the summer. Its 1000 degrees here and I guess we don't let our kids roam feral like I did in the 80s.

I need to talk to my cousins and find out who came up with that. I can only imagine the armed security not being amused by truckloads of rednecks looking for shrimp & titties......

Back in about 1965 we were living in Montgomery, AL. I was in the boy scouts, and my parents paid a modest fee for me to go to Boy Scout summer camp. It was fun.
Archery, swimming in the lake, and lots of eating. One thing they required of all the kids was learning to float. I was a very skinny and active kid. I did not float, I just sank. I had all the camp counselors try to teach me to float. I did exactly the body position as they held me at the surface, and they slowly removed the support, and I sank like a rock. Fortunately I could swim like a fish, and knew many different swimming strokes.

I grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, surrounded by redwood forests, creeks, lakes, etc. My sisters had horses. All summer my buddies and I (there were just 4 of us) explored the woods, camped out, fished at the lake, rode our sister's horses, brought bow and arrows into the woods to shoot stuff, built forts, climbed trees and rocks, you name it. When asked if I wanted to join the boy scouts or go to summer camp, I said, "Why"?

I never got to go the the big Scout Jamborees, but for some reason I always remember, one year it was at Camp Tapawingo in Oregon near the coast.
