Yes, those knockoffs were all built on a throne of lies and deciept. And since the introduction of Hot & Spicy flavor, SPAM is now elevated to even greater heights of awesomeness. It's not that Spam Musubi wasn't already the greatest Hawaiian gift to World Cuisine, but now it's even better. Herr_oberst, thank you for posting, and reminding us that the world was once a frightening place of usurpers to the throne.

I haven't had SPAM (the food) since I was in the boyscouts, probably 1984. I keep telling myself that one of these days, I'm going to pick up a can when I'm in a regular grocery store just out of curiosity. I'm sure the recipe has changed in the last 42 years so it's probably half as healthy as it was then. I'll have to do it when the grandsons are around so they can try it too.

when I was a kid, probably 4-8, I always wanted my mom to buy this stuff. I don't know if it was due to commercials or just the little devil on the can. I think it was the can, because I can remember the little devil clear as day.

Lady friend at work gave me a can of bacon Spam a couple of weeks ago. I made egg and bacon spam breakfast burritos with it and made her one as well. It was actually pretty tasty stuff.

When we go out camping - usually in the desert - we take a can of SPAM, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, & jalapanos. A big skillet of all that cooked up together makes dinner for one night. It's kind of something I've always liked eating as a camp dinner. I've never had any of those other things, but I remember a couple in stores years ago.

I have learned as I age, I dont do so well with sugar in my diet. At all. I eat a protein and vegetable diet these days, and spam is a snack from time to time.. I slice it thin throw it in the air fryer and hit it until its crisp. It ends up being chip like and it works well with dips etc, its a good diversion food, and has the additional bonus of being available on closeout from time to time. I prefer it over canned corned beef. It's also great for food storage.

Anyway, its better than waking up feeling like crap because I ate sugar the nite before.....

^^^ While in Hawaii, I partook in buying, preparing, and consuming teriyaki spam. While it was crazy salty, it was shockingly good. Once. You only live once. (And? I find most Hawaiian food not to my taste.)

the low sodium version is damn delicious to me. it is arguably the best fried rice addition.

having said that, I have mentally banned it from my kitchen. it simply cannot be good for me. too much fat, salt, fat. and I think our processed meats is our leading cancer contributor. so I made a personal choice for myself.

Costco 5.99 roasted chicken

The night before any longish bike ride, I like chicken and pasta. I usually throw in a bunch of mushrooms, peas, broccoli, whatever is on hand. Parmesan cheese. HB eggs.
If no roasted chicken is available, a quick, and very convenient source of chicken is in a can, looks like a big tuna can.
A big dose of protein and carbs the night before really seems to help get my ancient legs up that last hill at the end of the day.

I mean, "low sodium spam" could still be "high sodium" just lower than usual.

I eat ramen. I love it. Hell yeah, lots of sodium.

The first time I had ramen, it was cup o noodles when we moved to Japan in 1978. The first Christmas that we were there, we bought several cases of cup o noodles, and sent my aunts and uncles cases of cup o noodles ramen. (it was a special treat, and dad being in the military, we weren't rolling in dough). It's hilarious now when I think about it.

Back then there were chunks of freeze dried veggie, naruto (fish cake), and chicken, beef, or shrimp depending upon the flavor. And I think we only ever saw those 3 flavors that I remember.

Ramen is always on my cupboard shelf. The Roasted Chicken flavor is my favorite.
Always good for a snack and fast/easy to fix.
