Wierd things people asked you for, barter...
Before we left with my boys on a road trip couple weeks ago, we had to take care of renting a house. Normally if the place is over 30-45 min drive, we have an agent take care of it. We just screen or meet the potential tenant and give it a yay or nay. This one was only 15 min away, so we do this ourselves. We had a wonderful young couple and a little kid in there for 7 years. Not a sound comes from them. They bought a condo, gave notice. I like them so much that I refunded all the deposit and gave them a Home Depot gift card for 400 bucks and I know that money goes quick at a place like that with a new home.
We set up a time to meet all the potential tenants within a 15 min time period. Of course, some do not show up and that's to be expected. The one couple was a bit strange. the wife or girlfriend was very soft spoken and asked for a trade. You ready for this... She offered her psychic service in exchange for the deposit. The deal is 30 min twice a month for three months. She claims she is 90% accurate, always. Of course, my smart ass reply was, I would have taken the deal if you were 100% accurate. My wife kicks me and chews my ass after they left for saying stupid siht. Wife is right, always (no, not kidding here). She said they can turn around sue us for what ever strange reason of denial of rent. Its no Joke here in LA. Lawyers will think of something to nail us owners. I thought I have heard it all, but this one floored me. Thank goodness they do not qualify. Couldn't come up with first, last month rent and security deposit. At 3600 a month, that's one expensive palm read but it is 90%. |

A tenant of mine offered me sex for rent. She was about 4 weeks in "arrears"
.I was shocked & just stood there like a stunned mullet. She was a single Mum with two little ones. I helped her find work with my cousin. More than 20 years later she still works for him. (I was married at the time and my then wife got miffed about the whole thing. In her mind somehow this was my fault )EDIT: No doubt other landlords here have experienced the same.

OP: If she was psychic, she wouldn't have bothered offering her services.

If she was really psychic she would have offered sex instead.

ROFLMAO!
Maybe not thread of the year, but certainly an honorable mention, especially once Peter added his 2¢ and the peanut gallery started piling on. |

true story. El Paso Texas. me and a buddy were driving around in his Jeep CJ7. I was young. I cant even remember his name at this point, but he was the first CJ7 I witnessed with a Warn winch up front.
desert exploration. we saw a low-rider buried in the sand and offered to pull him out. he said he didnt have any money, but he would let us f his girlfriend. her facial expression was epic. we declined and yanked him out for free. we talked about it for years!!

Reminds me of Anchorman: 60% of the time, it works everytime.
Me? Rental biz one way or another since 1976. Never any offers of anything. I did rent to a bank robber once. That was fun. |

Priced an extensive home remodel, touching almost every area of the house, north of $100k. Friend/relative of a previous homebuyer.
After 3-4 rounds, presented the final quote, contract and construction docs ready to sign. All previously explained and agreed. The owner turns to me and says "Of course we will consider this as a mutual investment in this real-estate. You do the work now, and when we eventually move and sell the house, we'll both reap the benefits"

Wow, very entertaining stories. I am new to the landlord/rental scene. My sister and I share custody of a 3 bedroom 3 bath townhouse in Florida that my Dad left us when he passed away and it is all handled by a management company, so, dang, sounds like I am missing out on all the fun.

True story: I was working for a gay couple and they had an HVAC contractor that had done work there before, so I had to figure if I could work him in for the new ducting and whatever. 3 of us in conversation, one owner, the AC guy and me. They actually negotiated a hand job right there in front of me as kind of a joke. First I unpacked his bid and ripped his fees to shreds. Then I fired him and did the work myself while other trades were busy at their part. Gave me something to do other than superintend when a lot of rough ins were going in place. Yeah, I kept my T&M job right up to painting and cashed out. I thought it might be close though when I dismissed the dude. He wanted $1800 in 2010 just to disconnect an air handler in the crawl space that was in the way of a new foundation wall. I pulled the plenum off and sealed off that end of the unit in about an hour, then designed a new plenum that would fit in between the unit and the new concrete. Had that made for about $300 and tied the new branch into it.

I have a framed photograph of the golden gate before the bridge was built. 40 years ago an acquaintance who was a photographer and apparently a drug dealer offered me an ounce of cocaine for it. No but thanks

Also... Mid 90s. I had another tenant who was behind on his rent. Young guy on his own.
He offered me a Vespa scooter as payment for 6 weeks rent.

I have that half finished photo of the Golden Gate. Not an original, of course. I doubt I could get an ounce of Cheerios.
