Every mother's son and Congressmen's kid needs a ride in the SR, that's probably the only reason to resurrect it.
Most of us think of seeing in the daylight, which, to a segment, is correct; however, a SAT has many other options to see with.
The SR is now a caveman answer to someone's ego.
There are a couple wing things WAY way faster.

Sorry but you’re dead wrong about the satellites. Lots that you can’t do from space.

One of the things I read was that the plane may be used as a testbed for new, faster engines. If true that saves NASA from building an entirely new plane ($$$) and instead utilize a proven airframe.

As to the comment about the X plane program being a waste - pushing the boundaries of aerospace/space put us at the forefront of aviation technology. Some of that eventually trickles down to the civilian world/end user in ways many people don't realize or take for granted. I don't mean Tang but things like fireproof materials in airplanes.

Because of its age and lack of spares I think the SR-71 flying again is a longshot but I wish them success.

Perhaps, maybe you are in a smaller office?
There are all kinds of stats minds that use all sorts of intell.
I know you are familiar with the one that can see through a jungle forest.
That's just an elementary gen 1

Don’t believe everything you see in the movies.

Through the jungle, seeing is old old news .
Thats what I DO know.
also, there are many layers to seeing .
I am so surprised you don't know about the Red SQ and jungle observation.
Once the sats got gooder enough, the SR-71 was retired.
Its that simple

A few years after NASA retired the last few SR-71s for good the Air Force realized they sill wanted the unique capabilities it offered. They raised the question with NASA - how much would it cost to bring some of them back into service. This was before all the spare parts were scrapped and the fuel still available.

They were given some multi-million dollar figure to get it done but the Air Force balked at the cost.

It do not matter, Elon can launch Sats by the 100s now, it used to be a big deal.
These things use all sorts of wavelengths and freon.neon/ stuff to sniff out the impossible.
The SR is a huge liability with today's missile technology.
My opinion is it's a hobby, supported by the folks on this side of the moat.

My company currently does FOPEN ISR with manned aircraft because we can see what satellites can’t. Like I said, don’t believe what you see in the movies.

For sure, you are familiar with Lidar?
That stuff has to be 30 years old and see everything.
So somewhere between Lidar and reconnaissance, plus decoding
"things," ,
I have to say they would give the old SR 71 a salute and a goodbye.
The Sat can stay on mission or pass by whichever one they choose.....
A SR gets glimps, if all is well.
Thats all common knowledge.
Spar on , I quit, as this is just silly.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that the SR-71 is getting dusted off to do reconnaissance, all indications point to the aircraft being used as a research platform.

NACA/NASA X-planes are the reason why we have supersonic aircraft. Seems pretty useful to me.

LiDAR is of course LASER beams. Millions of beams, in a tight compact area. It has to be able to see the ground. Even in a thick forest, some parts of the ground receive sunlight. That is what the LiDAR has to see to remove the trees. We use it for road projects that the customer needs precision. No way can a satellite see 2 or 3 cm resolution like our Cessna 182T with a human flying it.
