Got it from Sears long ago, made by Kenmore. Can't find a new one or anything like it at any store but I've seen similar types on Ebay. this one is old, it's time for a new one.

This one looks pretty good. All stainless internals, and only $105 shipped to your door. Available HERE (bottom right of their page)
http://www.a1-water-distiller.com/im...istiller_1.jpg I have distilled before, but this setup looks super nice and conveinient. I first learned the basics years ago by reading The Foxfire Book. If any of you are serious about keeping alive old mountain traditions, you should read these books. Johnco... every moonshiner knows how to fake the bubble test. There is also a trick to "age" your 'shine in a matter of minutes. Sorry.... they're family secrets. ;) Anyone up for building a reflux still? Tips for would-be shiners... never build your still with aluminum pots, pipes, etc, and don't use any leaded solder for joints. Both will leach out poisons into the alcohol. And don't use an old oil cooler as a condensate worm. |
I had always heard that you have to be careful to distill at a certain temperature range. To much one way or another and you produce a version that will make you blind. Is this an old wives tale?
Sorry, don't own any of the books you recommend. |
Wives tale. Blindness comes from Glycol and other poisonus adulterations.

I like that distiller, very similar to mine. I just do it for fun and give away most of what I make to friends, so one that size is fine for me. my present one still works great for now, but I have friends that need one. I wouldn't use that plastic jug though.. My shine must have partially melted that last plastic container I used. I had to pour it all out. couldn't handle the plastic taste.

That's a hardtail, boys

TEXAS hardtail, that is.

Thanks M325 for getting back to the photos that won't make anyone go blind...

The stuff that makes people blind is fusil oil. Thats why people burn the mix before drinking it. If it smokes any, then do not drink it. Clean, pure "blue flame" and its going to be a good evening... Have not made any since returning to the states but it was a lot of fun when we did it. Joe A |

Next payday another wheel!

There are several reasons that moonshine was dangerous:
Sopme folks used old radiators as condensors, and they had lead solder in them. The lead would leach out and cause damage to the central nervous system and liver. Some moonshiners used lead solder to join the copper pipes and equipment. Some moonshiners cut their product with glycol as mentioned, but also sometimes mixed in methanol (wood alcohol) which is extemely toxic and attacks the optic nerve, among many other things. all of which are very bad. |
