Well, it's sposed to be a little stealth....

In January 1982 the U.S. Air Force awarded two contracts to Rockwell worth a combined $2.2 billion for the development and production of 100 new B-1 bombers.[59] Numerous changes were made to the design to better fit it to real-world missions, resulting in the new B-1B.[46] These changes included a reduction in maximum speed,[55] which allowed the variable-aspect intake ramps to be replaced by simpler fixed geometry intake ramps in the newer design. This reduced the B version's radar signature; the reduction in radar cross-section was seen as a good trade off for the speed decrease

If a B-1 is going fast enough you don't hear it coming! In full afterburner it burns 80,000 pounds of fuel per hour. I used to fly the KC-135R and was co-located with two B-1 squadrons. I never got tired of the roar of a B-1 full-blower departure. Jet noise, especially from something like a B-1, truly is the sound of freedom!

My wife's nagging is a similar din, but it sure ain't the sound of freedom.

Please don't tell her I said that.

This is true, back in the early and mid 1970's I used to buy a lot of "Air Combat" magazines and the B1 was given much press then. The radar cross section and blended wing technology with buried engine nacelles were the big thing.

Sadly from what I recall the low level run crew escape pod did not make the
production version.

Two of them took off over the building I worked in two summers ago, about a 1/2 mile west of O'Hare. This was the week after the air show. Scared the bejesus out of everyone in the office. I was close enough to the window to catch a glimpse.

The one time it was used it failed and killed Rockwell s chief test pilot.

The link I provided said 2 out of 3 survived the low level crash. This is still better than other low level B-1 crashes where no one survived.
