All those Tiki pics Baz posted reminded me of the motel in Myrtle Beach where we used to go with our two boys from the very early years up until they were in school... and some thereafter during Easter/Spring break. We called it "The Safari," but it was actually just "Safari"... with... I don't know... that may qualify as a Tiki face on the signage.
Good times... modestly priced oceanfront motel, but we always went in the offseason, so we could afford to go twice... in the Spring before Memorial Day and the Fall after Labor Day... and with a heated pool, it worked out great in April or May when the ocean was too cold... for us... seems like there were always some crazy Canadians and Ohioans out there. It's not still there... I just image searched it and found this photo of a coupla dudes standing in front of the sign in '72. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407652493.jpg |
Yeah John I hear ya.
There are quite a few hotels and motels in the Daytona area that have tiki themes....held over from the popular trend in the 60's. I think it's pretty cool and would rather see those (no matter how "old" they are) than most of the 'modern' facilities which really have ZERO personality. If you like Tiki, check out The Tonga Room in the Fairmont Hotel next time you're in S.F. Been there since 1946....
