Dammit Cash, seeing photos like these adds another layer of concern when one thinks of the newer style geared turbofan engines & how those planetary reduction gears & their associated bearings take one hell of a beating. I realize of course you are just pointing out the fact these things & anything else mechanical will at some point, suffer some type of failure. Is that the Qantas A380 engine that grenaded?

Cheers
JB

I work up the street from a jet engine turbine plant. Their building is huge. They had a blade let loose in testing, punched a hole through the building and took out a car in the parking lot several hundred feet away. They now have a concrete bunker in their building for testing.

As I was reading your post I was thinking, no way would anyone full speed or over-speed test one of these unless it was in a vacuum bunker.

We have a pair of P&W aero-derivative engines in the plant we use for cogeneration.

They get swapped out and sent back to the factory for complete overhaul after 4000 run hours.
This one didn't make it that long.

Yes - that is the engine on Quantas flight 32.
I was only posting it as a follow on to the other photo of the engine with the wheel partially ejected - to show what an uncontained engine failure looks like.
